Best all purpose hunting rifle?

Best "all round" hunting rifle.....

It would be hard to beat a Rem 700 in .30-06...................

My .02

Your mileage may vary..... ;)

Another vote for the 30 "ought" 6.
1.Visit the shops, handle all the mid-range $ ones (preferably a bolt action) and determine what fits you best.
2.Dont skimp on your scope...look through them all then pick.
3.Explore the capability of the rifle and shooter by budgeting enough to shoot several hundred rounds this year.

always liked the 444 marlin, but lately i find myself liking an iron sighted 44 mag. nice, easy to carry. if you're not shooting past 125 or so, its nice. if you're in the woods most of the time, it would be worthy of consideration, if not, one of the more standard calibers will do fine.

.30-06 all the way! There's nothing wrong with a .308 either, but you may get magnumitis if you get a .308. (It just looks so tiny compared to a 7mm Rem or .300 Win. mag.)

Your call

There are a few options but the gun has to be your choice and fit foremost. Either .308 or 30-06 will perform to your requirements and arguments for or against either are just arguments. After saying this I would choose 30-06.

Unless a sweet deal came along, first...

First of all, your uncles arn't wrong about the .30-'06. It will do pretty much whatever you need here in NA. The .308 is pretty much a short action version of the '06, and would be my first choice for a new hunter that doesn't reload. Tons of ammo availible, less recoil than the '06. To be honest, anything from 7mm-08 up through .30-'06 will do the job. I'd be more worried about finding a rilfe that fits you well and feels good, than the round it's chambered for. Make sure you gat the scope mounted low enough to alow a good cheek weld on the comb of the stock. Good stock fit goes a long way toward maximizing your accuracy potential and really helps minimize felt recoil.

Pretty good advice...I second mpwolf and his comments!

would you consider using a 12ga shotty? IMHO thats a real all purpose firearm tho not a rifle as you are asking, but really if you want a gun that does it all

It would also depend on your province, there are some limitations with bigger game in some provinces
But in my area, it's all good and landscape isnt really flat so even if I wanted to, I couldn't take a shot over 75yard (which is perfect for slugging)
