I was wondering what a good 1-4x scope would be for a midlength AR. I'm basically looking for a good all around optic, something that can be used for CQB (illuminated is a must) and then cranked up to 4x for longer engagements out to 500m.

I hear that the schmidt & bender 1.1-4x illuminated is the cat's ass but quite frankly, is more than I can afford. What about other optics? I've heard of the following;

Leupold 1-4x and 1.5-5x (These got a bad review, but I can't remember from where.
IOR 1-4x looks promising but what is up with that blue ring?
Meopta 1-4x not specifically designed for tactical use but got a good review
Nightforce 1-4x
Horus 1-4x Interesting reticle design (illuminated?)

If anyone has any experience with these or any other suitable scope than I'd appreciate your input. If someone knows the approximate retail on these then that would be helpful as price is definately a factor.

I have seen the Leupold 1.5 X 5 M/RT iiLUM. scope in person and ordered one after looking at one.

I specifically liked the SPR reticle.

I have not seen any bad reviews on these scopes and I have checked around.

I will be using it on a 10.5/20" AR, and on an M14 DMR clone.

SKBY.

The Night Force 1-5 x with NPR2 reticle I looked at was interesting a reticle a cross between the S&B Short Dot and the Leupold SPR reticle nice

I love my Leupold 3x9x36mm MR/T scope with M1 knobs up to 600 meters. Not spectacularly tactical or LCV (look cool value) , but it works very well.

I found the article that I was thinking of on the Leupold 1.5-5x. I was wrong about the negative aspect. It did allright but it did have the smallest FOV of the scopes tested. The article was in the Guns and Ammo AR15 special edition.

Kevin, great link, sounds like the accupoint might be the best bang for the buck. Although I have seen the IOR scopes in the EE every now and then for a decent price.

Hungry I'm sure that your 3-9x is a good scope (I've read good things on them) but I'm wanting to put together a rifle that is as adaptable to changing environments as possible. I'm basically wanting to build the rifle that I think I should be issued with, not some long clumsy C7 A2 that dumps mags because I'm a righty.
