Best all round moose rifle...

I *COULD* use my 30-06 with 165 or 180 bullets for moose, but I keep explaining it to my wife that it's for deer, and the .300 win mag is for elk and moose. ;)

That's the same line I strung out to my wife and she bought it, lol. Told her I needed a Tavor for coyotes and she bought that one as well.

No bad answers yet, my preference for hunting moose is with the big, moderate speed bullet category. The .35 Whelen 250 grain, 9.3x62 286 grain, and .375H&H 270 grain top my list. Nothing wrong with a 300 or 338 or 8mm mag. Or a .308, 7mm mag, 30-06, etc. etc. My next to last moose was taken with a 7x57 175 gr RN at about 250 yds. My last moose with a .375 H&H and 300 grain RN at just over 300 yds. both worked just fine.

Never needed more than my Scout Steyr 308 up to 340 yards for moose hunting...

Accuracy of a moderate recoil light rifle with a top tier optic ( 1X8X24 FD S&B ) is perfect for the task... JP.

I've shot moose with a 30-06 from 25 yards to a big under 400, works good. But I've gotten my last few with a 375 Ruger (all around 100 yards), works real good ;). It's actually almost amazing
As was said, if you want a new gun, buy one. If I was looking to buy a rifle strictly for moose hunting, I'd say the 338 wm is probably pretty much perfect.

30-06 is perfect for moose, heck in Sweden moose are taken with the 6.5X55. Why anyone thinks they need an anti tank round that makes you crap blood for a week when you pull the trigger is beyond me.

Apparently some folks on here are a little recoil sensitive...............Now I can say for a fact that I have shot some of the most abusive shoulder fired rifles on the planet, including a buddies 4 Bore double, 460 Wby, 450 Ackley, 470 NE, 577 NE, 500-465 H&H, 500 NE and 378 Wby etc...etc...etc... and not one ever made me crap blood for a week........or even a day. 340 made my eyebrow bleed for about an hour one time.............my own stupidity.

I enjoyed the 460 Mbogo I tried but honestly the Swedes figured it out over a century ago, 6.5x55 have taken a few Moose .140gr. = the SD of a 180 gr. '06

Recoil isn't something that you are meant to deal with once. It is something that one needs to be comfortable enough with to become proficient at placing the bullet where it needs to be every time they pull the trigger. For some people this means .243 and they are limited as to which game they hunt. For others it is something much larger, but the law of diminishing returns applies at some point. For most people this begins somewhere around 20 ft. lbs. of recoil.

You know, it's funny... If the OP had asked for the best moose rifle for his wife, people would have been chiming in with the 7mm-08 (I know there's a thread on here somewhere with that info in it) but, it's a guy ... Gotta go bigger. LOL! No wrong answers, as has been said several times. My moose all fell to 165gn bullets, all at 200+ yds. My father shot his last moose with a 170gn federal power shock (blue box) .30-30 bullet. 150yds.
The '06 will do fine.

The biggest issue I've seen with moose hunting around my neck of the woods is the high grizzly population. The place I am going to next year is a place where grizzlies regularly attend to gun shots and are usually on gut piles within 24 hours - or in some cases much less. Friend shot a moose there in the evening last year. He gutted it and left if for the night. It was buried by first light in the morning. Kind of interesting walking up on that situation.

That's one way of looking at it. Just to put a different spin on it the women are being advised to use the biggest thing they can handle and shoot well. ( might be a 7-08)

We should be saying "you know what's funny? We give the women the biggest thing they can handle and tell the men to use the smallest thing they can find."

A reality which supports carrying more stopping power.

"...the most popular caliber with Alaskan professional hunters and guides responsible for "backing-up" their clients was the .338 Winchester Magnum...."

Not recoil sensitive and neither are moose, nail Bullwinkle in the boiler room .270,30-06,308,300 savage,303 brit etc and he is going down.Save the heavy rifles for Brown bear and cape buffalo

Lol... maybe you should upload a pic of how you are holding the rifle. If you are crapping blood you might doing it wrong... the stock goes on your shoulder.;)

Jeff

30-06 will do you just fine for that range. Pair it with a decent scope and you are all set...unless you are, like others have said just looking for an excuse to buy another gun...you don't have to sell us on that!
