Best all round moose rifle...

.338-06, but only if you reload. Plentiful brass, manageable recoil, 3400ft/lbs of energy at the muzzle.

There is ALWAYS a reason to get another gun.... to us gun nutz it's usually a good reason too!

I agree rookie wildcat! My wife has killed many animals with a 7mm-08 with one shot! The key is bullet placement. For me, my feeling is you only need 1 big game hunting rifle in north America and for me that is a 300 win mag with a 180 grain bullet. Now a 30-06 is in the same ballpark and it has probably kill more big game than most.

I always say, forget about the caliber, use what you are comfortable with and shoot well.

I am not sure if there is a wrong answer here, but this sounds like a good excuse to just buy a new rifle - and that is never the wrong answer. I personally wouldn't go with another .30 caliber if you already have a .30-06. Get something interesting like .338+ type calibers - just for fun.

for moose, calling in the thick for most of BC, I use a custom enfield 303brit LOL .... 1 shot ususally gets er done like any of the "bigger" calibers for the under 100yard shots I've used it on moose with.
for general duty tho, tuned and trued ruger m77 markII 7mm RM
I do have a rem 700 .338WM for northern BC moose hunting only because I think if I ever do bump into a grizz in sheep/elk/moose country.... I'd rather the .338WM over 7mm RM

but dude, yer 30-06 is gonna get er done no problem, just fine in fact, with the right bullet selection. I'd spend the new rifle money on optics, rangefinder, scope, binos or some other gear you have been wanting to add to the mix.

I've killed enough moose with most everything from a .270 to a .375 H&H to know for sure that a 30-06 is plenty fine for moose out to, at least, 400 yards with any reputable big game bullet.

It is true that a 30-06 will kill moose with the best of them but under some conditions it may be lacking.
I would prefer heavier bullets than I usually use in my 30-06 (165-180) something in the 200 to 220gr range,
although the 06 will work out to 250yds and beyond it will be lacking when the heavier bullets are used due to it's
rainbow trajectories but if you are proficient and can compensate you will be able to succeed in harvesting your moose.
I would prefer to leave my 06 at home because frankly I have other choices and actually prefer a 300 magnum or 338 for
all my moose hunting except in the thick stuff where my 358 Win or my 350 Rem Mag with a low power scope and
backed up with iron sights get the nod.
Good Luck
bb

I shot my moose with a 87gr bullet out of a 243 win. It was between 50-100 yards. Moose died and didn't run.

30-06 + 393 yards + 1 shot = dead moose. At least, that's how my math worked out :)

Buy a new rifle if you feel the need. But you really don't need to.

They ALL are just accelerated blobs of metal and all kill moose when plunged into the vitals. :) These guys dropped to 7x57 and .308 Win, and nothing fancy for ammo (150gr Fusion in the case of the .308).

All of the above rifles will kill a moose just don't expect to kill from mile away .

300WSM worked fine,
Love .308 and 270WSM but never shot moose with any of those two,
Love these because i use them but any other will do.
It is not caliber (in 90% of cases) that kills,
It is proper shot placement and good bullet construction(ones that dont fall apart so easy),
That is what matters and whatever you are comfortable shooting use it,
Be sure of your shot placement and make it count...
Talking about what caliber is better is like kids competition who can piss or spit further...

Keep the 30-06 for deer is barely enough
You need a 300wm or a 338wm for moose
Hope your wife see that
