Best ammo for 303

.303 British!

Pardon the bluntness, but me telling you what your rifle may or may not shoot well is impossible. No two rifles are the same, therefore range time is required.

Go buy 3 or 4 different makes and weights, and let the results speak to you.

I have to agree with Lefty. The last factory stuff I used was Federal and it was ok. I love my old No.5 but I buy ammo like all the oldtimers did for these rifles. Heavy bullet and cheap price. If your shooting deer on the prairie I'd go with 150 grains otherwise 180 grain. They are deadly hunting tools but not fine tuned group producers usually.

Hornady ammo uses a 312 dia bullet which might be worth looking into in comparison to all the other brands being 311

It will all depend on your rifle and how shot out it is.

My unwrapped Faz loves the UMC 174 grain FMJ and the Sierra 174's. I am working up loads for the 150 grain and it looks promising. The next on my list will be to try cast bullets.

I used Hornady 150gr last fall and was happy with it though I don't think the Moose and Deer were. Winchester Super X 180gr shoots well at paper and is cheaper than Hornady. Haven't tried it for Hunting yet.

Yes agreed with the few above here, You will need some range time to determine. Mine likes the winchester 150 sp. So its just abount impossible to determine. You may be lucky enought to find a friend/neighbour/relative who has a few part boxes of .303 that their rifle didnt like, I like to trade around with friends with different calibers and bullet types and wieghts. You may be able to build yourself a little comunity of traders to do just this, kind of a you scratch mine and I scratch yours kind of thing. Maybe even fellow members in the area would be interested in swapping a few rounds here and there. Try, you may be surprised. Maybe you have a box of -06 laying around tht didnt work in yours that a fellow member maybe looking for or wanting to try.
Good Luck with finding the magic number.

I've always found 174-180 grain to work the best. Winchester 180's generally shoot very well. I reload, so I find Sierra 174 match to shoot great.

I have a 1916, Winchester built P14.
I slugged the barrel and it is at .3135"

I thought that it might not like the smaller diameter bullets, but I was wrong.

The best shooting bullet in it is the Sierra 180 grain FB Game King. [.311"]
Another one that surprised me was the 180 RNSP Remington Cor-Lokt [.3105"]

But it actually shoots many bullets well, including the larger diameter Hornadys.

It is not unusual for this rifle to flirt with 1¼moa with loads I build for it.
One good thing....it is easy on brass, unlike the LE rifles.
Regards, Eagleye.
