I was wondering what the best ammo for personal protection in 9mm is. I've heard a lot of people who use Hydra Shocks and swear by them, and theres the new Federal expanding full metal jackets out now, are they any good?

WTF? The 'country' doesn't "allow" bad guys to attack... But the rest is pretty much true after a certain point... :(

yeah its to bad we didnt live somewhere where we could set up our own experimentations with ammo on the bad people huh...

If you were allowed to use a handgun in a true defensive role the best ammo for defensive use is almost any hollow point from a reputable manufacturer.

Speer Gold dots
Winchester Ranger loads
Remington Golden Sabers
Federal Tactical (bonded)

The Federal EFMJ should be you last choice in the realm of expanding ammo. It is a definite compromise due to countries that dont allow HP rounds.

My personal preference in bullet weight is heavier grains vs lighter. Heavier slower bullets always trump lightweight hi-velocity rounds in penetration...but you will find a varying attitude towards that.

Once you have selected the bullet you want then you have to PRACTICE till your sick of it to put the bullet in an area that isnt dependant on bullet design for effectiveness.

Boltgun

pistol wise I would say these Hydra Shocks...(wish you could buy these in Canada)

Other firearm wise a 12g buck load or slug

you should find out what the police use and use that. it'll will give the prosecutors one less item to nail you in court with if & when it comes to that.

Yes I would like to hear the prosecutor tell the jury that police can use this round for self defence but you can't.

When did the police get the right to live but not us?'

A convenience store worker or taxi driver is more likely to be the victim of a violent attack than a cop but he can't defend himself.

For the 9mm that also passed the FBI test.

9mm
-Winchester Ranger 127 gr +P+ JHP
-Winchester Ranger 147 gr JHP
-Speer Gold Dot 124 gr +P JHP
-Remington Golden Saber 147 gr JHP
-Federal Tactical 124 gr JHP
-Federal Tactical 135 gr +P JHP

I like to load the home def. mags with 1/2 Golden Sabers (JHP) and the bottem 5 Nato Ball in case the ####er happens to be wearing a vest.

Just curious also where to buy, around the Vancouver area. I hope nobody judges you when you guy in and buy it, like "...why do you need this" type deal.

The issue you will face will not be what ammo you use, but why the ammo you used to defend yourself was different than the ammo you shoot every day at the range. The Crown will imply you planned to use your gun to kill an attacker by buying special "defense ammunition". Crown will imply, and likely provide proof, that the "defense ammo" is more likely to cause death than standard ball ammo you shoot at the range. All the makers of "defense ammo" will back this up in their literature. The graphic photos of the tests comparing this to ball ammo will be shown as evidence of excessive force.
If you load for defense and are concerned about the legal after effects more than saving your life, or the life of loved ones, etc, load your range ammo.
If you have a real situation where your life is in danger, or your child/wife/etc is in danger, you will thank god for the opportunity to see a courtroom.
