best backpacking rifle?

If your looking for lightweight and compact(folds in half) I would say consider the kel-tec su-16. It's polymer everywhere possible making it extremely lightweight and you can use the 10 round LAR pistol mags in it. However it's only .223 great for small game. Might not be so great for large/dangerous game. All tho 10 rounds. If self defense is main concern then short pump 12,Rossi,lever 30/30 all great choices

This may not be your "cup of tea", but I use a Rem mod 7 KS in 350 RM, very light and handy, with a 1.5-5 Leupold, plenty of gun for all occasions, and though I've never done it, I'm going to try pistol bullets for plinking and maybe small game. It has it's own special spot in my camper where it just tucks into and lives there when ever we're out. Both the wife and 12 year old son have learned to shoot it adequately and are 100% familiar with it's workings, just in case.......Tough gun to beat for exactly what you describe. Just a thought. Could do the same with a 358 Win or 35 Whelen.

can you legally use a centerfire rifle on birds and bunnies rabits??

Most of the western provinces only get concerned that you not use rimfire for shooting big game, and that you not use lead shot on waterfowl.
Other than that, they each have their own differences. I have hunted in the three western provinces as resident.

whitetailwoodsarcher,

Do you reload? You can build some pretty handy ammunition if you are willing to #### around a bit to get yourself set up.
A round ball on a small charge of powder, in the .44 would make a great, fairly quiet grouse/rabbit round. Easy enough to stick a couple rounds in a pocket, and slide them in one at a time as or if required.

I use a Hammond Game Getter too. Usually gets me a couple grouse a year, while deer hunting.

Can you point me in the direction of where i might be able to find one for myself? Please PM me if you would be so kind. It looks like a great pack.

That's all I take with me is my Winchester 94 .30-30
Such a great all-around gun, light, short, and easy to carry around.

Agreed. its been a popular choice for a century. Light weight, not too long. Ammo available everywhere.

I use my Boito Hiker .410 shotgun . . . the ammo is less bulky than larger shotguns, but you're right . . . it's very loud. Slug rounds are great for defense.

If you still care about the subject I'd take your 44Mag with a mag loaded with full power loads for the scary things and the same weight cast bullet over a reduced load of Trail Boss or similar velocity powder.

The latest greatest one I'm currently ramblin' with in the Coast range/Marble range is this ranchhand in .44mag, goes 4lbs 12oz's in the ramline synthetic stock I modified to fit.
I'm a 1894 Marlin fan through and through but hey...the '92 with a 12" barrel is nearly a pound lighter and a pound is alot of weight to us "gram weenies. I find I can load the '92 hotter than the 1894 as well.
I carry a Savage Rascal .22 in the winter months.

Model Seven in 350RM or 870P with Brennekes in the Cariboo Range. Either one lowers my anxiety level slightly when pushing through Grizzly tunnels in the alders.

This is a little Marlin 1894P that had a serious amount of "mountain miles" on the odometer. Great gun for packing.

This little 1894CSS jumps in my hands for a walk in the hills now and again.

This Stainless/Laminate Guide is sadly no longer with me, it was a little heavy for my liking but was sure a beauty.

I use a real rifle when backpacking because I'm usually really hunting.

Now if we're talking "backpack hunting" not just "backpacking" the kit changes up a bit...
I have yet to draw first blood with the NULA. Going for goat in a few weeks with it. I'm even thinking of outfitting it with one of those "new fangled" telescopic sights! :D
The others are just your standard issue Edge stocked 700 clones with decent barrels screwed on running sub-7lbs.

+1 here, you never know when you'l forget your shells, not every hardware store or Canadian tire has 44 mag.

If you can find one a 30-30 winchester trapper with the 16 inch barrel is nice to have.
