Interested in people's opinions on what the best choice is for an affordable short-barrelled shotgun (14" or less)?

I know there are some great options in the $1k+ range, but I'm really just looking for a backup bush-type gun.

There seem to be so many brands/models out there (Turkish, Chinese, etc.). I've already got some high-quality shotguns, so I'm looking for something cheap for this purpose.

Something with aftermarket compatibility, removable chokes, etc. would be nice. But not essential.

Dominion Arms Grizzly - the tube fed, not the mag fed.

Takes 870 furniture. Built like a tank.

^this. New ones are getting up there a bit $-wise, but it wasn't that long ago they sold for allot less. Put a WTB ad up in the EE, you'll find somebody who bought years ago and just wants their money back.

"built like a tank" is right.

Purchased a 12" Grizzly and an Express 870. Hate to say it but Id recommend the Grizzly for fit and finish over an 870 express. Express finish was horrible, had to have it Cerakoted. Look at it the wrong way and it would start to rust.

The Grizzly action feel may leave you desiring more out of the box but they smooth up nicely.

Magazine caps... the DA won't fit on a Rem but the Rem will fit on the da.

Good catch! I think my DA mag cap is in the garbage tho, have so many extensions around.

Haven't had to fit any parts yet either, although I haven't used any of the removed DA parts. My DA is down to receiver, bolt, and action bars, everything else was replaced.

I have the 12.5 mag fed. I bought it for atv-ing way, way up north, so if we ride into a big bear we can load magazine quicker than individual shells. It's very heavy. Bushwhacking with it sucks, the magazine is always in the way. And it's heavy

The grizzly is a great reliable shorty but its extremely heavy. You cant go wrong with one.
I find myself using a Canuck Defender PA. Its a light wieght gun that holds 4 in the tube and best of all the cheapest option I have found for a bush gun. They can be had on a sponsors site right now for $269.95

^interesting to read that. As much as I totally dig the mag-fed ones, I opted for a tube-fed/bead sight to keep the weight down a little, and to keep it from snagging on things. I'd still like to own a mag fed though, just a little down there on the priority list.

Only modification on mine was a Hogue pumper. :) Kept the buttstock as it was, as the Hogue ones are grippy and I don't need it to be. Besides, that rough..Chinese plastic on the buttstock exfoliates the right side of my face every time I use it. Added value right there!
