best bang for my buck ?!

I had the opportunity to handle a Winchester SXP Defender and really liked how it felt. I thought it felt much tighter and better built then both the Mossberg 500 and Rem 870. I think I would still pick the Mossberg 590A1 over them all but it is out of your set budget. Give the Winchester a handle and I think you'll be surprised how nice it is.

Old 870 Wingmasters are plentiful and have a good quality/price value. The ability to shoot 3" shells is unimportant for anything but waterfowling with steel shot.

The only prob with mossbergs and a pistol grip
is that the safety is on top and while holding the pistol
grip you can't reach the safety with your thumb
I would suggest the maverick 88 , same gun but
the safety is behind the trigger and they are under
$225

Just picked up a Maverick 88 two days ago at Wholesale Sports in Calgary for $229 (there were more in stock). Great bang for buck. As for the Maverick 88 combo, I saw it at the Southland Canadian Tire for $299 the same day. Hard to beat those prices. Good luck!

Another nod for the Maverick 88 i purchased the security model
and even with sling and shell carrier and limb saver "which you will need"
still comes in around 300.00
cant beat that value

Not familiar with the Maverick, but I have a Mossberg 590 with 20" barrel and 8 shot tube that I love. It might be a bit out of your budgeted range, but you get a lot of gun for your bucks, even more now as the factory rifle has a few more bells and whistles then when I first bought mine in the 90's. Never had any issues in competition or just messing around shooting clays and steel.

OP, you mentioned customizing the gun with a few add-ons...that being the case, I think you should definitely stick with the Mossberg or Rem pump, if only for the availability of aftermarket parts. The Norinco HP9 would also be a great choice, since it takes Rem parts. Unless the Maverick is a clone of one or the other, you might regret being limited in your choices after you buy.
