Best bang for the buck 22lr?

Something with a bolt for a beginner, preferably with iron sites. Savage has some very accurate rifles for a good price. Here's one review.

Savage Mark II

For the first time since we began doing our annual gun test, a single rifle has won both the Editor's Choice and Great Buy awards. So how did it do it? With its gleaming stainless-steel action and barrel and a laminated hardwood stock that echoes the sculpting of legendary stock-stylist Reinhart Fajen, the MK II certainly looks considerably more upscale than its price tag indicates. But good value alone doesn't win Outdoor Life's top award. To do so, a firearm must exhibit a level of performance consistently better than that of other guns in its class. The Savage MK II .22 RF we tested proved to be not just the most accurate rimfire we tested this year, but the most accurate rimfire we've ever tested, including some high-dollar rifles of exalted European origin.

After the gun was sighted-in at 50 yards in a test tunnel, the first four 5-shot groups measured .191, .202, .263 and .260 inches, for an average of .229 inches. Yep, that's less than a quarter-inch! More remarkable is the fact that these tiny groups were fired with standard Remington/Eley ammo and an old lot of CCI Green Tag, neither of which are considered the ne plus ultra by accuracy fanatics. The smallest group of all was fired by team member Sam Arnett, who demonstrated his award-winning benchrest technique with a barely measurable .109 inches. By comparison, an eighth of an inch equals .125 inches, so go figure.

Aside from its obviously super-accurate barrel, much of the MK II's shootability was credited to its weight and the solid way the contoured stock rides the bags.

Testers' Comments: Incredible value; can't beat the price for this kind of accuracy; Trigger pull could be better; A tack driver; Savage can be proud of this firearm; Aesthetically very pleasing overall; a damned fine .22 rifle; I¿ll buy it.

She can shoot so get her something that is accurate. A good bolt Cz, a savage, many others. I have many and the one I get most pleasure from in the gopher patch is a Rem 541 bolt. Many of the old Mossbergs are great if you can find one.

Yes the Ruger target model is worth getting if you don't want to spend a fortune with aftermarket stuff. The laminate stock is nice, the barrel (get the stainless) is decent. The only mod required is having the trigger lightened which you have to do with the regular as well ($40). Mine shoots American eagle cheap fodder plinking/varmint accurate. Lapua Superclub shoots very well out of mine. Stick with the factory 10 round mags and you'll have lots of fun.

That being said the more expensive Thompson Centre R55 benchmark is an even better and more accurate semi (loves CCI standard ammo).

Personally the Savage fit/finish has always thrown me off (especially the mag set up).

The CZ is a very good little rifle. It does everything well and is decent quality. However it isn't the type of rifle that really inspires pride of ownership like some of the higher end and far more expensive stuff does. You can sometimes find top grade, high end stuff in the EE for less than a new CZ. Of course you can also find used stuff with higher asking prices than new. So Caveat Emptor applies.

Go 10-22 for one reason: ease of operation, resulting in more enjoyable shooting. My wife has a Brno Model 2 (now CZ) and she loves it dearly. It's pretty, very well made and very accurate. But...she bought me a 10-22 for father's day and now she really enjoys plinking and gophering with it due to it's extreme ease of operation, and it's easier on the fingers than working the bolt 200+ times. A ham fist like me doesn't mind a bolt but it seems to get a little hard on the girl's hand if one shoots several boxes of ammo.

My friend wished the Pink Chipmunk was available for when his daughter was young and he was teaching her. She would have killed for the Barbie edition. Bolt Action. Doesn't Epps have some?

10/22, you can't lose on that one.

I'll recommend the CZ 452 as well. They shoot extremely well and have a "feel" to them that make them everyone's favorite.

I worked my way up through many cheaper .22s and recently sold the last of them. My CZ 452 will never be sold.

best bang for your buck? Seems to me all .22's make the same bang! so the best bang for your buck would probably be an old cooey! As far as accuracy and reliability for the money goes I would say savage mark II. And for a little nicer overall package cz.
