For mounting on a shotgun, I would just pay the bucks and get a good light. Fenix, inforce, Surefire...all good.
DO NOT get NCStar and Sun Optics or other Chinese $50-$100 crap. I did and my flashlight attachment flew almost as far as the wadding!
The only good thing is Sun Optics has a lifetime warranty so I got a new one. It sits on an AR now. No problem there.

NC Star mag tube rail works well and stays put. Its very lightweight and low profile which I like. Good for a sling mount too and only about $13. Shop around, some of our illustrious sponsors sell it for over $30. I think I got mine from Colonel Mustard.

Evaluate what you consider breaking the bank. You can cheap out and buy an ncstar or other knockoff brand, but its not a matter of if it will break, but when and then you'll end up buying it over and over again. You could spend 100 bucks now and be set for life with the likes of surefire, inforce, fenix etc, or you can spend 120 over the next year replacing garbage components.

Fenix has many cost effective solutions.
Use a mag clamp for an extended magazine on an 870. One end clamps on the barrel ( with white ramped front sight) - other holds a Surefire light with the push button operated by the thumb of the "forearm hand". The light can be positoned to illuminate the front sight AND the target. Nice part of this arrangement - once the gun is fired and the action worked, the thumb comes off the push button and the light goes out until the firearm is worked fully forward again, protecting the "shooting position" of the shooter ...

I'm a fan of the surefire for end however it's not cheap! best I have found is 199.99 but worth every penny. Bright light durable and easy to learn/use

It's an Inforce WML. They seem pretty decent. Many site sponsors have them in stock.
For me: my Valtro wears a Streamlight TLR-1. Very solid, and worth the $. Has taken an absolute pounding and still lights it up bright!
I know im going to get ripped on for this but here it goes. I tried a lot of flashlights, and in the end i went with the pelican 2380. I have 3 of them on a shotgun, jr carbine, and 22-250. The simple reason, is the batteries. Its pretty damn bright and only uses 2 AA's. You can easily spot critters out to a hundred yards. Also has a lifetime warranty. I sold all my fenix lights because i got sick of the batteries. The last straw was when the batteries died in the midle of a field while i was closing in on a skunk. Dealing with the chargers and crap is just plain bull####. 2 aa's. Its that simple. Any shop or store or gas station has them.
I think he meant the bulb rather than the mount.
Hunting at night may not be legal in your neck of the woods, and in an emergency a dollar store light will probably work for the first shot. So cost effectiveness would depend on your use case
