Hi CGN'ers,

I am in the market for a Smith and Wesson 460 and want to pick all of your brains on what is the best barrel length. I was looking for the 5" because I like the size and it is not too heavy. I would not be shooting more than 100 yards with it.

Let me know what you think.

For myself, I'd prefer longer. Greater sight radius, greater velocity, slightly less recoil - a few extra inches of barrel doesn't really add all that much extra weight. It's not something I'm going to be carrying, so compactness isn't an issue. Aesthetics however, always factors in to most purchases, so if a 5" barrel is what turns your crank, then that's what you should get.

If any plans to go south and hunt with it, the longer the better. In fact I plan on getting one with the integrated rail to go hog hunting in a few years. (AZ)

This.

Plus if its just for coolness factor and target shooting at the range, get the 5 inch. It does attract a crowd. Its a firing breathing dragon!!

I have a 500mag in a 6.5" barrel and it not only shoots great but provides a good enough bang to attract the crowds at the range. That being said i like the look and size of the 8 3/8" barrel better with the full underlug.

lol the ammo you make would draw a crowd.

If they made the 460 with that 6.5" half lug barrel, I'd buy one

I used to have the 460V 5 inch, it was fun to shoot and always drew a croud but shooting full house 460 loads rattled my sinuses and gave me a headache after a few rounds. I sold it and bought a Taurus Raging Bull 44mag and find it much more comfortable to shoot. I can drop 100 rounds in an afternoon comfortably and it's very accurate.

Haha, ya i get some odd looks when i show up with multicoloured bullets.

Surprised they didn't make one for the 460 yet, seems to be a nice balance of barrel length, weight and accuracy.

To the OP, if you plan on getting one i hope you reload! Also get an extra grip, mine wore out after 4-5 thousand rounds.
