I have a ITHACA/SKB with a 28"barrel and a mod choke. It was the old mans. I don't ever use it and was thinking on setting it up as a dedicated skeet gun. Take her in and get a couple inches taken off. What do you guys think?

Dave.

I think it would be spending money to ruin a perfectly good gun. Lots of guys shoot 28" barrels and longer for skeet. I wouldn't do anything to that gun except open up the chokes to Skeet or Improved Cylinder.

Back in the day, 26" barrels were the norm for Skeet, pump, semi or double. Through the 80's, 28" barrels became more popular for O/U's, with 26" the industry-standard Skeet barrel for both pumps & autos. In the late 80's with the introduction of Sporting Clays, more & more 30" barrels turned-up ... a length formerly found more conventionally on Trap & waterfowl guns, and with the introduction of "tube sets" from Briley & Kolar for the small gauge Skeet events, more & more turned to 30" O/U's for Skeet. A lot of the same folks found the 28" semi to be more their liking for the 12 gauge event, with even a few opting for 30-inchers ... the same semi they were otherwise using for Sporting Clays. Today, 28" and increasingly 30" guns in pumps & semis are probably the most common, as are 30" O/U's. Some are even using their 32" O/U Sporters as Skeet guns.

Bottom line ... leave your 28" barrels alone !

barrell length

30" is more the norm these days. I have shot a tubed 525 with 30" barrels for the last 2 years and if I can try one first I would like to go to 32". If you can swing a 28" semi you can swing a 28" o/u. with no problem.

Yep, barrels are getting longer

Actually these pictures are of a Metrogun barrel, a reduced noise system that uses a very long barrel. (Actually it is just a 3 foot long choke)

If guys can swing one of these, a 28" barrel should be no problem.

Definitive, eh ???? :D

Pick anything YOU like between 14" (which some are really partial to ) and
34" (which some have to use, cause they only have the one ! )

Most popular & most numerous : 28" & 30" .
