Best barreled action on a budget

The aero precision stuff is a good value.

On the Rem700 footprint I really like the Kelblys too.

Unfortunately,.for $1500cdn, it'll be Tikka or Savage.

Pre 64 model 70 winchester is worth looking at too. The rifleman's rifle - just limited options in the way of stocks...

I like the Tikkas because they are a great action and great trigger. Prefit barrels are available and ever growing aftermarket support make that the 'easy button' IMO
Something like this would be nice if it was in 6.5cm instead of 6cm

Stevens 200, add a barrel and trigger, still below the budget and will shoot just as good as the rest.

I built a 284 on a Stevens 200 using a shilen pre fit match select barrel and a basix sav2, shoots very well

I'm a fan of the rem 700 action/footprints. Lots available for aftermarket parts, especially on this sight. Ultimately, don't make a mistake and buy something you don't want. Save up for whatever it is you have in mind, or you will be disappointed. My current PRS gun is a KS Arms Wolverine in 6.5 creedmoor.

I had a Kelbly. One of the smoothest actions I have ever felt.

I agree! I don’t absolutely need anything but I’ve made it a goal to try as many shooting sports as I can over the next couple years and this is the next step after the 22 precision stuff which I just built a rifle for so this is preemptive

Absolutely. If you like to tinker around like I do I'd recommend looking into the Bighorn TL3 or origin. Rem 700 footprint and interchangeable bolt head. I have a few barrels with different bolt heads.

JC custom barrels for a tikka start at 710+tax so that leaves you 700ish for an action. (Never had a JC but I’ve heard good things and would likely get you the barrel you want from the start.)

I’ve seen a few tikkas selling in that range. You can always sell the factory tube, stock and mags to make a little cash back if you over spend.

I may also look for a full rifle sub $2500 but I’m certainly a tinkerer weather it’s cars, trucks, guns etc… I’ll likely take it apart and try to make the most out of it

Change the barrel and sell all the take off parts.
A little extreme. Those Houge stocks barely fetch $100 on the used market and people aren’t lining up to swap in Howa sporter barrels. If he was going that direction he’d be about the same money to track down a 24” heavy barrelled action from the start. That said the dudes said twice now he’s not into the Howa direction.

OP sounds like you should contact Mystic Precision. I’ve heard nothing but good things about them.

Fair enough, I must have missed that part lol.

I’ve got a 20” heavy barrel 1500 and it’s always been an accurate shooting rifle. I’ve switched to LH bolt guns so it doesn’t see much use the last couple years, toyed with selling it but I think I’m just going to buy an mdt chassis and see what I can get out of it with handloads.

I don't think you can get a factory 26" barreled action... if it were me, I'd grab one of the Remington 700 barreled actions with the 24" threaded 6.5 Creedmoor barrel.

Totally man you have my vote anyways, I tried one of those sporter models in 308 a year or two ago and hated it, really bad results, but I just picked up one of the 24” Heavy Barrel models, swapped the stock and through a fixed 10 power with a quick bore sight, my first shot was 2 inches high, adjusted and the next 5 shot group was sub MOA, every group since then has been reliably the same. Hands down the most impressive bolt gun I’ve ever owned, a real pleasure to shoot too compared to some other similar configured rifles. Can only imagine with hand loads, very excited for this season to find out.

I bet that 20” rocks the same results, even in just the XRS chassis would make a huge difference. Bet it’s a little snappy thing.

Seems it may be cheaper to buy in 308 and swap the barrel
All things considered, it is a pretty good option.
I have spoken with many experienced match shooters and gunsmiths over the years at matches, swap meets, etc , and when it comes to basic accuracy, the barrel and bullet combination are by far the most important components .
Upgrading the other company's gradually is a viable alternative.
I know many will say " buy once cry once" , but starting out with a cheaper rifle and upgrading gradually gets a shooter actually shooting right off the hop.it gives a shooter the opportunity to hone their shooting and reloading skills while they gradually upgrade triggers, stocks, sights. Etc.

That’s true. I’m not in too much of a hurry, it’ll likely be summer by the time I get a membership at a long range here. I’ll probably mess around with the 22 until then but I’ll keep goin through the EE until I find a good deal on something something.

I got the Defacto in 308 Barreled action a month ago and even with the tikka footprint and rem 700 trigger it dropped right in the X-Ray chassis i paired with it with no modification required. Trigger has the bottom safety. Looking to see if I can fit the jewel trigger I have but it's top safety and I think that will need to be milled/modified. Haven't shot it yet as I'm waiting for warmer weather as I will need to have my cleaning supplies with me to do a proper break in procedure.
