Hi guys.

Just moved (back) to Alberta where I'll be spending a lot of time in the mountains. I'm just curious what you would suggest as the best slug shell for protection against large animals Bear/Moose, etc..

Thanks in advance,

A cow moose (with nearby calf) is one of the most dangerous animals in the north woods. Some people worry about the bulls during the rut, but it's usually the cows that cause trouble. They WILL pummel you into the dirt, then back up and do it again! If you can't climb a tree or otherwise get out of the way, a shotgun with slugs isn't a bad idea.

Thank you, sir.

up close is going to be the only reason you are in danger. shoot a slug and if you hit well good. but if you miss then you next shot is gonna be in panic. so the 000buck will help with inaccuracys. then a slug to finish it. in my opinion 000buck is more effective inside 30yrds.

Wow. Definitely something to think about. Thank you for the lesson. I'll definitely be looking that route!

Thanks again

your welcome
i have never had a close encounter with moose but black bear i have had many but never came down to pulling the trigger (unless hunting bear). stand tall and confident and face them. usialy a win for both sides

A cow moose attacked my old suzuki sidekick a few years ago when the calf she was with wouldn't get off the road. She nudged it to go over the bank and it wouldn't, so she got really angry and charged, It was wild.

im well aware of the potential for danger, however i believe it represents such a miniscule chance that carrying a gun for moose defense is laughable. the only people who would consider it are wanna be outdoorsman.

Look - If I my thread title was asking for Moose defense only, then yeah it might be a bit over the moon and you could question what I'm trying to get at, but I was being general about all large animals that might be encountered when in the mountains. Since I'm going to be there quite a bit it would be nice to be safer than sorry in case that "miniscule" chance happens upon me.

The more often I'm there exposed to any possible situation, the higher the odds of something happeneing. I'm just taking precautions.

I'm not someone who's spending every other weekend at my cottage in Muskoka and want to carry a gun when I go to the local dump to watch the bears...

i think for something up close like that i would carry 000buck in a 3"mag. if in a pump. go slug-buck-slug-buck-slug
I would put my slight variation on this. In the really thick stuff, one Winchester Supreme copper plated 000 buckshot shell, for the first shot at tooth&claw range only, if you cannot get those Dixie Triball buckshot rounds. The rest of the magazine filled with the best slugs you can afford.
Once one is out of the green jungle of briars and willows, carefully remove the single buckshot round and replace it with another slug.

Cheers!

I know several people who have been tree'd by moose, it happens. They are one of the most dangerous animals outside brown/polar bear territory. As for ammo, do some research on what magnum slugs do in soft tissue, hollow points degrade performance at high velocity. Managed recoil slugs will out-penetrate HV slugs due to weight retention, and they're much easier to shoot. The best ammo we can get here will have to be handloaded. Get some BPI DGS or thunderbolt slugs, or some ECU USS slugs and you can make your own that will outperform Brenneke's

I second the buckshot being very effective up close. I would go with a hard plated 00 buck with higher velocity if I had 3 1/2" chamber. For example the Winchester Supreme 3 1/2" plated 00 buckshot load @1450 fps would give individual pellet energy of 000 buck with 50% more pellets...
