Best beginner hunting set up

I started with a sling shot but times have changed, probably a little more info needed to get an intelligent answer, maybe age, ### and size of beginner as well as a budget.

A firearm of proper caliber, blase orange vest and cap if needed. Good boots.
A knife or two.
Dress for the weather and the activity level.

A backpack comes in handy for snacks, rain wear etc

A 20ga SxS is where I start ............ Toilet paper is a must as well. :)

Folks, I'm curious about your thoughts on good beginners set ups for hunting.

From the responses, I'm sure you've discovered that your question was too general, sort of like asking, "how long is a piece of string?" Are you asking about guns, archery equipment, gear, or all of the above? What do you intend to hunt, and in what kind of country will the hunting take place? Alberta has a broad range of hunting habitats. What is your shooting experience? You should learn to shoot by shooting at inanimate targets, and avoid shooting at game until you've gained a degree of competence. Do you have a PAL? If not that would be a good starting point. Have you spent much time in game country? Do you intend to hunt as part of a group, or will you hunt alone? When you think of hunting, what is it that you imagine?

He's probably just doing the first few posts to get EE access.

Someone post a link to the "what first hunting rifle" thread(s).

I see your living in Alberta, so I'll guess that you want to hunt whitetails, mule deer, elk and moose. I suggest a 270 win, which will be fine for all species mentioned and plenty of factory ammo available. Go with a bolt action. Rifles you should look at are tikka, browning X bolt, remington 700, winchester m70 and ruger 77 and there's a few more as well. Shoulder as many rifles as you can and pick the one that feels best. A 3-9 X 40mm scope is all you will need and I will suggest a Leupold VX11. Good luck with your search.
