Before you go shunning this away, as another one of those mindless threads of people asking "the best non-restricted black rifle under $1000", I thought I'd ask an easier question:

What is the best (or in your opinion of being the best) RESTRICTED black rifle under a $1000.

Now obviously, there is going to be a LOT of AR15 contenders, but bonus points will be given for interesting designs- be it bullpup, conversions, barrel cuts, etc.

Well I have to say that I have fallen in love with my CSA 223 with 11.5" barrel. Impulse buy from Wolverine for $399. Added the AR magwell conversion from Tactical Ordanance and now I love it. Its worth the $899 they sell for. Well made and easy to clean.

IMHO it's a self-build AR15. To keep it under $1000, you're basically talking about a bone-standard M4 clone with forged (not billet) upper and lower and the excellently priced DPMS 14.5" 1:9 CL M4-profile barrel from Wolverine.

But admittedly, building a rifle is not for everyone and unless you own the tools already, a proper build will exceed $1K.

If I had to buy off the shelf, I would avail myself of an NEA due to the warranty and customer service factors. Really, you only have the NEA, Nork, and some VZ58 clones to choose from, and perhaps a couple KelTec products, pricing dependent.

Another vote for the Norc M4-gery. I've had mine for 2 years and put a couple thousand rounds through it. No problems and reasonably accurate. Is it the best AR out there? Hell no. Does it do everything asked of it for less than a grand? I'd say for sure. Good way for a newb or someone on a budget to get into the AR world.

Go buy via Freedom Ventures, a stripped Upper/Lower set, then build from their.

Or an NEA 10.5" minus the LPK, and use DD LPKs/BCG.

I guess I'm "mindless" because I started a thread asking experienced gun enthusiasts about my options for a black rifle under $1K. The thread I started was to find the best black rifle for my specific needs, ie coyote hunting.. I don't see why my thread is mindless and yours is so important. Not that you should care, djmay, but I find your openening sentence offensive and ignorant.

Under $1000 and a black rifle. The best is going to be an AR.

But... Let's go a different direction.

The CX4 Storm. Simple blow back with a decent shape and good build. One pin to break down into two equal length pieces. Although basically a large pistol carbine it's technically I guess a bullpup since the action does extend slightly behind the pistol grip. It uses 10 round pistol mags, and you could in the 9mm version use a 40 S&W mag 96F to try 13-14 rounds. Results may very.

They look cool, the build on mine is decent and even those not into modern firearms seem to like shooting them. Also you can use them on a pistol range.

The only real negatives that I have with the Storm is the web on the stock which was due to US laws and the hoods on the sites. They make mounting optics more difficult.

I'd personally recommend buying one used then getting a non restricted bull barrel put on it and having it as a non restricted. You could do this for a bit more than $1000 if you do very well on the original purchase. Probably cost you a bit more but worth it.

As for Coyote hunting. I would think the 40 S&W version might work ok for that. Depending on your hunting style. I don't know much about coyote hunting so I could be off base with this.

In non black rifles I would also say CZ858 is a fun rifle. I would use it for hunting deer or coyote especially in areas such as slash (Again not an expert). You can pick one of these up in non restricted for $695. Mounting optics is a pain with them though. Great firearm for open sights and very handy off hand.

under a grand? NEA by far, match grade poly barrel + whatever length you want + great service

I have a norinco CQ as well, decent gun, I still like it,

I like the CZ but I prefer the Mini 14/30 Newer version Ranch Rilfe:
MINI 14 in 5.56mm/.223 or MINI 30 7.62x39 if you hunt...add the Sparta and it has some nice features to add sights and optics!

CZ858 isn't a black rifle. It's a combloc era battle rifle.

The CZ is handier than the Mini14. If you're going to mount an optic then the Mini14 would be easier for that. Also the min14 isn't a black rifle either.

What Happened to "But... Let's go a different direction."? LOL

The CX4 storm was my answer to that. Not your typical solution. :D

But let's face it if you're looking for a real black rifle not a pistol caliber carbine under $1000 then it's the AR.
