I've noticed this as well, and it has me scratching my head. I see oodles of Enfields at gun shows and the EE for $650 and up for mix-master guns of questionable value.
Meanwhile, there are Mausers of many types floating between the $350 to $600 mark.

Just bought a box 100 fmj's from Tradex for $44.
They regularly have Prvi components in stock. Reloading for 8mm Hungarian hasn't been any more or less difficult....
As for the OP: He had better already be reloading. I'd recommend anything in .308/7.62 or 6.5mm. Maybe 8mm/.323 if he doesn't mind paying a little more for components. Anything outside of those parameters is going to get pricey, and have a more limited selection.
Definitely Yugo M48 was a big deal on Eastern front of WW2, I guess Germans got ahold of time travel machine. Also zb24 is something new to collectors. Great first post.

Most countries put a fair amount of R & D effort into developing military rifles which were reliable, safe and acceptably accurate. Canada was one rather glaring exception with the Ross rifle.

Always a tricky pick. It kind of depends what you want. Of the big three; Best built and most reliable probably the Mauser, Fastest shooting the SMLE and variants also has a 10 round mag, a nice bonus in combat. Mosin, cheapest and most crudely built but the bloody thing will work no matter what. All had many millions built over long periods of time so all have been effective.
If that guy could do that he is likely the finest marksman in the world.
Also his rifle is more accurate then anything out there.

Couldn't find the original comment on 1700m bottle cap hit with a Mosin. I call BS. There is no rifle made today that can do that on demand and a Mosin most certainly not. Now I own a Mosin and like it but please keep things real. 1" at 1700m is more or less 0.06MOA. Please. Now I am sure if you fired many thousands of rounds you might hit the cap once but that is luck not accuracy. Even sniper Mosin's where kind of Minute of Man at 500m and generally only considered effective to 300-400m.

Just to keep things in perspective, ballistics tables for a 168gr .308 match bullet with a MV of 2800 fps when zeroed at 285 yds shows a bullet drop of 417 inches (34.75ft) at 1000 yds/914 metres and a bullet drift of 217 inches (18 ft) with a 20 mph wind. And we're talking about hitting a beer cap at 1700 metres here.
That's either the unluckiest beer there is..... or somebody was having range estimation problems that day.
Mind you I once had a neighbour who told me that he got a heart shot on a running buck at 1000 yds with a .303 British and that he gave up hunting the next day - no further challenges.

After that I am so looking forward to his 2nd post....... I once hit a beer case at 170 metres with my mosin.
After thinking on this, I cannot really pick a favorite. I have a bunch of #4's and a rack of Mosins so I must like them, but I think if nice unmolested Mausers were easier on the wallet I'd have a truckload of them. I really like my VZ24, and my 1919 Swede. My M48 I have not shot enough since I acquired it.

There are some great shots out there.
A friend of mine bought an Ari Luger with a dark bore, the seller was very serious when he assured him that he used to shoot crows at one mile distance with this gun.
Needless to say, we had a great laugh, and I always laughed when I saw that "crow gun" again.

I think I might be able to spot a brewery at 1700 metres, but not a beer truck, beer case, beer bottle or beer cap.
I was hit by a beer keg once , but I don't think that counts .

I dropped a six pack once and got hit by beer. Does that count?
I have had the privalage to shoot many ex-military bolt rifles. All the better ones have been mentioned but one that I distinctly remembered being impressed by was a Ross M-10 that had a near perfect bore. It had been sporterized and was wearing a Weaver 4X scope. No problem to shoot 5/8 to 3/4 inch groups at 100 yards. Another Ross M10 that an acquaintance of mine rebarrelled to Russian 7.62x54 chambering was a very fine shooting rifle as well.
Of course not , a six pack is a multiple projectile delivery system , like a shot gun , we're talking about aimed fire here , geez .
