I'm sitting on a bunch of steel case ammo ( 762x39 , Chezh ) I don't expect tight groups but I would like to do some range shooting. I hear the military primers are kinda on the hard side , for use in bolt actions. I was eyeing up a Howa for such use.. Any suggestions , based upon experience?

I've had a Ruger Ranch in x39 for a few years. Low cost and Gen1 so Mini-30 mags and/or Ruger 10-rounds. I get MOA out to ca 200 yds, even with Chinese ammo. NO Probs with 'hard primers' when I had some CZ & Russ ammo left - that ammo is 'gone' now, except for Barnaul I've saved back.

You will be happy with either CZ carbines or the Howa in 7.62x39. I have both and love them, steel case ammo shoots well out of both. The Howa rifles are underated for accuracy and fun to shoot. It goes without saying that CZ make accurate out of the box rifles but I was really impressed with the Howa heavy barrel in 7.62x39. Prophet River has quite a few in stock for $799 + tax + shipping:

Ditto. I have a Gen 1 Ranch and I 3D printed a magwell to take AR x39 Pistol mags. Shoots all my old steel case extremely well.

I've been shooting 7.62x39 surplus as well Norinco red box in my 2 Howas (a regular stock and "tactical" EXCL Lite stock) and a Ruger Ranch Gen 1 without any problem whatsoever.

I have the above Prophet River linked heavy barrel Howa Mini. It consumes both Chinese and Czech. I'm happy with it.

I would like to get a Ruger Gen2 scout rifle in x39 that takes AK mags ( 5/10) .

I did read somewhere that Gravel stated they are currently having a tough time importing any Ruger rifles that take AR or AK style mags....so that is why the Ruger Gen2 Scout (5.56mm and x39) are not here yet. I can't verify if that is true or not.
