Hi all,
I know this has been done before but there could be updates with new guns available.

I am looking to be able to compete reasonably confidently out to 200 yards. I'm not looking for a competition rifle....just one that will ring the gong.

I'm thinking $500 and under.

Comments anyone?

200 yards with a .223?!

Norinco JW-105 Bush Ranger, Stevens 200, Savage Axis, H&R Handi-Rifle or Ultra will all be under $500 and will all do what you say you want.

Being a Handiholic, I have 16, I'd get the Handi Rifle. It's available in Superlight, Standard Contour and Heavy Barrel. Mine is the standard contour and I like it. It's very accurate. I have a 7mm-08 in the Compact Superlight and I like it even better. I think before long I'll sell the Standard .223 and replace it with a Superlight. The only problem with the Superlights is that the barrel will heat up with continuous shooting and accuracy will decline until it cools off. Where I am, it's not a big deal. The weather's usually cool enough to eliminate the problem. That's probably true where you are too. I had a Bull barrel .17HMR and didn't like the way it handled in the field. It was too top heavy to sling comfortably and wore me out carrying it around all day. It would be fine and stay cooler if you only punched paper. Good luck with whatever you decide.

budget is not a nice word! how about going with at least a decent quality rifle. In the end, I think you'll be glad you did! ;)

great suggestions all....and yes, I am interested in the highest quality that is available within my budget!

Savage Axis and Stevens are certainly worthy candidates!

Hadn't considered the Vanguard .... thought it was over my budget, but I'll definitely be checking them out now.

Thanks again.

I just bought a savage 11 hunter xp in .223 for 460 after tax. Comes with a cheap 3x9 bushnell sharpshooter scope and has the detachable mag which comfortably holds 5 rounds instead 4. Shot 30 rounds yesterday and managed to get about 1.25moa with my best 5 shot group. It might be capable of better as I was running cheap AE 55gr for the first 20rds and 45gr whitebox for the last 10rds (plus i dont steer very well).

More aftermarket parts available for the Stevens than there will be for the Axis, if you plan on improving it later as funds permit.

Stevens model 200.Mine shoots cloverleafs at 100 yards with winchester whitebox 45gr cheapo ammo and I can consistently hit milk jugs out to 350 yards. The parts are cheap so aftermarket barrels are easy,so are stocks(though I have never found mine to need it)plus it's cheap enough that you can get a scope for it and you still won't go over 500$
Thanks,
Hunter.

stevens 200!

takes savage parts, tons of options to upgrade if you want down the road.
The bolt feels better on it than my rem 700 sps, and the gun shoots better too !

Timney triggers are about $140, and easy upgrade and well worth the money.

options for stocks, bases and bolt handles are there as well.

Really easy to change the barrel if need be, or you feel it's necessary in the future.

Stevens 223. Got one with a scope, bipod for 350 on the ee. Put a rifle basix trigger and all in for 450. Great gun for the money. Savage axis looks cheap to me I would rather take a stevens.

stevens 200
awesome little rifle, lots of upgrades you can put on it,
wifes got a new boyds thumbhole on it and new trigger from sharp, shooters.
she was whackin gophers at 321 yards last year.

Stevens 200 is the way to go but if you aren't into wrenching or tweaking then an Axis is a close second. I've been shooting cheap bulk Winchester white box ammo through mine off a sandbag (front only) and managing 10 shot groups inside the diameter of a CD at 200 yards without much trouble.
