Best Bug Dope?

Hi gang,

I don't hunt but we hike a lot.

Figured you folks would know - What's best for Mosquito control?

We're just in Southern Ont. - So it's not brutal like up north or anything, but the 'squeeters have been pretty heavy the past few weeks.

What have you found works best?

I use Watkins Great Outdoors when I'm fishing and the bugs are insane.

I once had some bug dope the military used.
Rubbed some on a Friday evening and was not bothered by mozzies till well after I got home and had a shower.
Deep woods off is ok as I have not searched out the bug dope.

At work i use strait diesel. NO joke. just get a bit onto a rag, and wipe it onto your clothes. You will be amazed at how well it works. Sure you smell like diesel, but you arent getting bit by mosquitoes. LOL

We get some stuff called Croc Block at work. Not sure where they get it, but it works better than anything else I've ever tried.

Anything with DEET in it. Brand doesnt matter. Its the DEET that counts.

And another thing, no spray will keep the mosquitos and blackflies from swarming. All it does is stops them from biting.

I'll also had that I only go in bear country with someone that runs slower than me

I still have some repellant that is 95% Deet.
Very effective at keeping the biting insects away.

Watkins. Works really well - there was a small town nearby that used to carry it, and I haven't been able to find any since that store closed down. When I read this thread, I did a quick google search just to make sure I had the name right. As it turns out, I discovered that mountain equipment coop sells the stuff. Thanks!!

98% deet like we used to get in the army. It actually worked.

IIRC, it was called REPEX. You could also start fires and take rust off nails with it.

If you don't want that kind of harsh chemical on your skin, there's always Avon Skin So Soft bath oil.... you'll be a hit at hunting camp!

The Canadian army is now using a product called Ultrathon made by 3M. I still have a few tubes at home from my last deployment but this stuff is also available in stores. It's very efficient as it contains 34% Deet.
