Best Bugjuice PROOF finish?

Well, was out blasting squeeks this weekend, and the skeeters were out in full force. It's been proven time and again that bugjuice and stock finishes Don't mix. Spray-on bedliner transfers VERY easily, and so does polyurethane varnish. I need something that's not gonna leech into my skin or cause a ruined finish.

BLO? Tru-Oil? Tung? Anything that isn't an oil? I'm open to suggestions.

An epoxy type finish is going to be your best bet. Dura-Kote, Arma-Kote, or if you want a clear to show-off the wood, then talk to Dh79 for some of his amazing House Of Kolor clear coat.

I don't know much about mosquito repellant, but I would think that a good catalyzed finish would be your best bet. As Splatter already mentioned, armacoat, duracoat, or a catalyzed urethane enamel would probably be the most chemical resistant. Nothing out of a rattle can.

What I have done is switch brands of Bug-dope. I'm now using this stuff called Natra-pel, a citronella based concoction. Not quite as effective as Deep Woods Off but saves the wood on my gun during trap shoots

Taking 500 mcg of vitamin B-12 daily keeps the bugs away and won't get on your stock.

Who said anything about polyurethane? I'm talking about urethane enamel. It's very different. Urethane enamel is used to paint cars, polyurethane you buy in a little tin at home depot.

Just to be clear, the main difference is that the urethane enamel is catalyzed to cure to a hard resistant finish. Also, when it's over $100/quart, you're paying for a high quality coating.

You could test some water-based polyurethane (I have used it with good results, once cured it is very resistant to solvents)

But epoxy is hands-down the best choice.

Yup, and you can think of the stuff that DH79 sprays as clear-gloss epoxy.

A good epoxy (fibre/composite) rifle stock. I have not found anything yet that will touch the stuff we use.

Instead of using bug juice, why not get a Therma Cell from Canadian Tire? They're on sale this week. They really work! They don't have any scent whatsoever and you can get a "holster" to wear. You don't even know you're wearing it. Here's the link. Remove spaces in WWW

I'm partial to oiled wood. Tru oil works very nice indeed

i use Ruastoleum anti-skid floor paint. available in spray-bombs at acklands-grainger in black, grey, and clear. It has proven to be resistant to bore solvents and DEET.
