hi i have been poasting alot of poast he lately getting rady for my camp trip next weekend. its going to be up in the bush by chitek lake! anyways im looking for a good bush gun capable of taking both small and large game up to deer. i also what the gun to have iron sights because most of my hunting or shooting will be within 100 yards. thanks!

I blasted a deer at 95 yards, and a good 20 yards of that was brush, with my 7mm mag this year. As did a buddy. Last year, my dad shot two through about 60 yards of fairly dense brush with his 300 WSM (one of them center-punched a small willow tree on the way there). And a buddy smoked an elk with a 270 as well.

They all worked well, leading me to suspect that the whole 'heavy/slow calibers' as superior 'brush cartridges' myth is complete bunk.

If I *knew* that the longest shot I'd have to take would be <150 yards, I'd probably pack my 500 S&W handi; however, the country I hunt as often as not offers 300+ yard clear shots as well as the occasional brush shot. Therefore, I prefer faster/flatter cartridges.

I could always do go for both heavy and flat by using my 378 weatherby, shooting 300+ grainers at high velocities

Open question for sure.
A lever in any of the 30 caliber chamberings?
Marlin 30-30, BLR in 308-358win?
A BAR will work too.
The strings seems a tad short maybe?
Borrow a rifle that you know shoots well until you can properly
set yourself up?
Good luck with your quest and your hunt.
Cheers.

All good choices but i want somthing that will be good for small game to. U am leaning towards a marlin 1894c. 38 for rabbit size critters and 357 for deer sized critters. I was also considering a 22 but its not all that great for but game. In fact its illigal to take big game with the 22 Cal bullet.

.30-30 reigns king for what you are asking and at the ranges you are describing. Get a box of ammo for it anywhere too. Marlin, Winchester or Mossberg will give you all the fun you need.

small game to deer, shotgun is your nbest choice 12ga or 20ga with a rifled barrel and a bird barrel is all you need

Under 100 yards, the .30-30 is as good as any. It's said to have taken more deer than all the rest put together.

I'm prefer a rifle to a shotgun myself. A good centerfire rifle is the best choice for big game, and with reduced loads is good for small game. If you use a cast bullet or an inexpensive pointed jacketed bullet at around 1200 fps, it doesn't expand and the small stuff looks like it was shot with a .22. A reduced rifle load makes less noise and kicks less than field loads in a 12 ga.

Recovered low velocity rifle bullets, .375/270 Interlocks

I'd go with a 30-30, or a 32 win special as well. I've done it for years with a 32 special. Easy to carry, and fast to point, plenty of thump in the range you will be hunting at. Good luck.
