Best cartridge in your opinion?

The 280 ack is possibly the most ridiculous cartridge ever thought up. Bridging the gap between the pedestrian 270 and 7mag, a gap that never existed, and one if it did, is full of fire forming, expensive brass and dies. Puke!

I see you haven't got the answer to the op. Instead it's the typical bashing you wait to spew !! negative and attitude

If I didn’t handload, and wanted to have my brand new unfired rifle remain that way for the distant future, I’d pick it in a 300 wsm. More ridiculousness.

"most ridiculous cartridge ever".... Hmmm, I like that thought, sounds like thats exactly what I need. I'd go 280 AI over 7 RM all day long.

The 8x57 and the Mauser Model 1898 that was literally made for it.

I dig this answer a lot since it was a father of so many other cartridges and the actions still great after all these years.

If I could only have two rifles though, they'd be a 7mm-08 (or 6.5x55 or 6.5 Creedmoor) and a 375 H&H (or 9.3x62)

They cover all the bases on Earth with the least amount of fuss and most efficiency.

Maybe the truth is you can't afford factory loads or expensive brass/dies .. You're in tuff ..
Anyway try to keep tuned into what the op asked for .
Like, stay positive if you can .

Honestly don't know if I'd say the best.

But I am sure enjoying 6.5x55 swede. Loaded with 100grn for predators right now and 130 grains for white tail. Nice and flat shooting, minimal recoil.

Heck yeah.

6.5x55/6.5CM/7mm-08/7x57 are awful close and such a great place to be. The two older have so much good history and a solid track record, and the two new ones are modernized, more efficient versions of same that work in great modern rifles.

I own or have owned a rifle in all the mainstay and established cartridges but my favs are 270Winchester and 35Whelen. I suspect Jack O'Connor and I would get on well in discussions regarding the best platform for either and that he would approve of my 35.

I earlier posted my choice, but I am also very fond of the .323 [8mm] offerings.
8x57, 325 WSM, 8mm Rem Mag. These are very effective for N.A. game.

The last 3 Elk I have taken were with the WSM and 8 Mag. 275, 308 & 425 yards.
None went more than 15 yards after the shot....gotta like it. EE

My go to cartridge for many years was the 338WM simply because of all of the different bullet weights that were available to me as a handloader , then I moved over to the 7STW just for squirts and giggles.
