"Best" cheaper .22 (under $250)

I know everyone has a different opinion on what constitutes the best .22 I`m looking for a plinker, probably prefer a bolt action or semi-auto. Something that doesn`t mind getting fed the cheap ammo.

I`m looking to spend some xmas money, looking for a .22 under $250. Do you think I`d be better off looking on the EE for something (ruger 1022 already scoped, etc) or what are some good options for brand new

10/22 vs. 597

Henry vs. Marlin lever-actions

Plinkster vs. w/e (just kidding :p)

Get a Cooey (and "why does everyone like the Cooey?" ;))

And my personal fave: "Why not save up and get yourself a CZ, even though you said you set yourself so-and-so $$ limit...:)

All in jest and good clean fun - but it's always a good idea to check the E & E! :cool:
 
Stevens 300 c/w scope. You can update the rifle with a more powerful scope in the future. My son has a 2 year old Stevens 300 and a 3x9 x 40 Bushnell scope and bowls the critters over up to 150 yards. Some hits at 200.

I shoot a 40+ year old Lakefield Mark II c/w 3x9x and never had a repair done. Great critter eliminator out to 150 yards plus.

Old or new, the guns will do their job to a certain point. Some better than others. Both these bolts will eat any ammo, and come up smiling.
 
Go with a marlin semi-auto the model 60 or 795...you won't be disappointed. I sold my 10/22 to buy the marlin and for the price you can get a decient scope and it'll be one great gun.

You need to first decide what you want and what you are going to use it for? Bolt gun? semi auto? single shot? Takedown?

Are you a hunter? Probably not or you'd have a .22 right. So you want to poke holes in cans?

Do you want to poke holes from far away? I'd suggest a bolt action, savage is my favorite, cheap but accurate.
If you want to tap, tap, tap, with a semi-auto get a remmy 597 or a 10/22

I have the 795 but it's the same action as the 60 but it's a mag feed rather than tube. I have had mine for about 6-8 months so far and must say it's an awsome gun. I've never had a ftf or a fte and I've mostly shot the cheap stuff through it (american eagle and cci blazer). The only thing that would be nice is a lighter trigger as it is fairly heavy from the factory...but there are very easy to do mods that can bring it down if you find it not to your liking. Personally I don't see it being a problem as it's mainly my hunting .22 not a target gun. However that being said it shoots way tighter groups than alot of other .22's, it's way better than my 10/22 was and almost half the cost. Another awsome feature is the bolt hold open on the last shot then you don't have to worry about counting shots or dry firing. In your price range you can easily afford the gun and a decient scope and you'll have yourself an accurate reliable little gun and you can use all the money you'll save buying the gun on ammo :D
 
I have 2 Mossy 151Ms and a 152K. The 151M was actually made for target shooting. Full wood and special peep sights. Many peeps were taken off for mounting a scope. All mine wear 3x9x scopes and target and rodent shooting to 200 yards should be a blast. Also love the stock loading ports.
 
Cheap .22

Yes the Marlin in semi-auto or Savage model 64 semi-auto if you want semi auto. I just bought the Savage 64 last Sat. and took it to the range today, have to say it shot great!! My friend has the Marlin and it too is a great inexpensive .22.
 
My .22 collection consists of the obligatory Cooey model 60 open sighted, and a Savage MKII heavy barrell with bipod and a ridiculously over-powered scope on it. I love both guns, the Cooey gets the nod for robustness and overall reliability, whereas the Savage is a very accurate shooter, has a wicked trigger (accu) and is no slouch in reliability. IIIIIF i had to suggest a new rifle, it would be a Savage. Cheap, reliable, accurate, and best of all made in Canada! How can you go wrong with that?
