I just sold the tactical protruding choke for mt 870 and I now need a new choke. What do you guys find gives the best pattern for buck shot and keeps slugs flying straight?

thanks!

I would start with an IC choke from the get go for the slug. With the possibility of this same choke perfroming best with the larger sizes of buckshot. But only live fire testing at the range will prove this to be true. The one wrinkle is your answers could be as varied as each brand of slugs/buckshot in what I assume is a smoothbore barrel.

what are you going for? a big spread or tight pattern with buck shot?

this choke is the best i find. tactical choke.

I've read on here that it's perfectly safe to shoot slugs through a full choke. I got a full choke for my shotgun and it says right on it not to shoot steel shot, slugs, or sabots through it.
Today I forgot and fired four rifled slugs through it. Haven't had a chance to inspect it yet, but what should I look for? Just bulges?

go to brownells and order a range of Carlson's chokes, theyre like $12-15 each. buy at least an improved cylinder, modified and full.

it really depends on what type of slugs you are shooting, what specific brand, and your gun. foster slugs like a choke - some shoot well out of modified, some (surprisingly) out of full. i shoot brennekes from improved cylinder.

buckshot, for the most part, acts like birdshot - so youll need to select a choke that patterns how you like at the range you require.

Just checked Brownells ,$32.99 each. I am just getting my first 12 guage, Mossberg 500 and 590. so don't know much about chokes .I know that they tighten up the pattern but beyond that?? Is there a page here to read up on that sort of thing? Thanks!

My secret weapon is my Carlson extended and ported Light Modified choke. Its right between a modified and an IC choke and its extra length gives the shot cup a little easier of a time finding its way through. I get impressive 00 buck patterns and reduced recoil. My accuracy with slugs seems to be unchanged, but with a reduction in recoil.

It looks like this, but it is marked "LM".

they are between $16.99 and 19.99 for Remington ($12 wholesale), are they twice as much $ for Mossberg?

IC choke and Remington Sluggers give me 3 inch groups at 25, 50 and 100 yards in my 870 express 12 gauge. That was the first time I ever experienced the same sized groups at 25 and 100 but I'm just going to go with it.
