Best combat handgun...

By combat handgun do you mean the best handgun for a war or post apocalyptic world? Or best handgun to conceal carry for self defence?

In a post apocalyptic world i would want something that has had a long track record of reliability and shoots readily available ammunition. I would want something that is very popular with police or military so that scavenging spare magazines and ammunition would be easy. 9 mm is the obvious choice but the pistol would depend on where you live. I would want something easily disassembled for maintenance in case you had to reassemble in a hurry. I haven't found pistols easier to disassemble than Berettas. The PX4 being the easiest followed by the M9. The PX4 is not a great pistol but it shoots the NATO 9mm and in Canada there would be predictable places where it could be found right across the country as long as those border crossings weren't looted.

If you live in Ontario cops carry 40 cal so a Glock 22 would probably be your best bet.

In the states I would either choose the Glock 19 or M9 due to popularity of ammo and mags and overall performance and reliability.

For everyday carry if we could a Glock 19 (hollow points)with a Raven holster due to size, reliability and weight.

#1 Beretta 92 FS 9MM
#2 Sig 226 9MM
#3 1911 45ACP
#4 FN Hi-Power 9MM
#5 Glock 17 9MM
#7 Webley Mke V1 .455
#8 Luger 9MM
#9 Walther P 38 9MM
#10 Mauser C96 Broomhandle 7.63x25 Mauser

My Top 10, Own or owned five of the ten. Shot them all.

For current combat ??

Good morning,
I participate to the process of selection for the service pistol to be adopted by my police department.
We had several models to evaluate, Beretta, S&W, Glock, Walther, all in 9mm.
The Walther QA-90 was first, Glock second in the shooters evaluation.

Now, strictly combat speaking weren't Beretta and FN Hi-power selected by many armies ?

Out of what I have currently, my ria 1911 gi 9mm. I have pleanty of mags and ammo for it. Sar B6c close second due to smaller size and light weight. Both are more accurate than I:)

If I had to pick something off the shelf, Id likely go for a glock 22. Reliable, 40cal is used by local police and some armour truck companies, and easy to maintain.

In a SHTF situation, I would want a Glock 17, if you can't find parts, mags or ammo for a Glock, you might as well let the zombies, Jihadi's, or baddies take you, hell I even found a 17 in an air return vent when I was a house painter, those things are friggen everywhere :)

The 92FS, Sig 226 thence the Glock 17.

The 92Fs due to it's absolute reliability and longevity.

Governments are moving to the Glocks because they are dirt cheap and funds are tight.

I, on the other hand have absolute control over what I have to spend so a Sig 226 sits unloaded behind 4" of steel safe next to my bed with a cable lock through the magwell and breach in a Princess Auto box with two Master locks securing it for home defense. If that doesn't keep the unemployed drug users at bay I have a black, for stealth, miniature Schnauzer ready to leap to my defense. The effectiveness of the latter can be attested to by John in BC who recently dropped in for coffee with his lovely fiance.

ps Some of the above may have been edited for political correctness.
pps I do hope this thread is not going to be used by the Liberal Government to choose our Military's next hand blaster.

I have this horrible image of Canadian Forces charging into battle with miniature Schnauzers strapped to their hips.

My vote is Sig P226 DA/SA with decocker. In combat, you need to get that first shot off without messing with a safety.

Sad to say....my g22....it would break my heart to leave my 1911's in the safe...but that's the reality..

P226, by and far, for combat. I've yet to have one fail on me.
If I was daily CC'ing a pistol I'd probably go for something like a P228 or M11A1.

An as light as possible to ease everyday carry, most reliable pistol under just about any circumstances in the most common pistol caliber that offers the highest capacity with good average combat accuracy up to 25 yards (hit center mass of a human size target repeatedly) and of course ease of operation and training (same trigger pull every time, least amount of exterior moving parts, no hammer, least amount of levers or buttons that could jeopardize proper operation/use when under a high level of stress).

^^^^Those requirements are meaningless for an accurate paper punching tool but if I would be allowed, as a civilian, to use and carry a sidearm for combat purposes it would be a Glock in 9mm for all of the above requirements. A G17 for it's capacity and carry in colder weather or a G19 with the 102mm barrel to carry in warm weather. If only one is allowed it would be the G19 all black with the 102mm barrel.

Unless I'm fighting off a hoard of zombies... 6 shots of 44mag should take care of most "problems"

Our government would see the "light" and I'd be allowed to carry something around all day... I'll take some tupperware

Civilization as we know it is coming to an end... Who cares for a HG, give me a rifle!

P320, m&p or g17
In 9mm hp.
In combat a consistent trigger wins. A striker is faster to shoot accurately one handed. P226 is fine but out dated, try shooting a bunch of rifle then transition to it for a stoppage at close range and you'll see the point. The first round is almost always a throwaway.

Two issues with the P22x series, first is the high bore axis which induces higher felt recoil for it's overall weight when compared to a polymer framed Glock and the fact that it requires, on average, extra training due to it's multiple levers and their ergonomics. Once one masters a P22x, it's a very good piece of equipment tho.

After donning my flame suit, given the vagueness of the question, I dare to say that the best combat pistol would be the FN FiveseveN. In its favour:

Lightweight

Extremely accurate

Ballistically effective out to 200m (with LEO ammo)

Defeats soft body armour (with LEO ammo)

Terminal ballistics is better than competition (hotly debated though. I have seen ballistic gel tests showing rifle-type yawing)

Recoil is far milder than the other main competition (9, 40, 45)

High ammo capacity - 20 in normal mags, 30 in mags that are extended but don't look crazy like a 33 round Glock mag

Ammo carrying capability is much higher than competition - a box of 50 rounds is half the size of a box of 9mm

ACCURATE!!!

The only downside is logistics. Finding ammo isn't as easy, but if I was heading into "Combat", the pistol is my secondary and I would be far more worried about refuelling my rifle. It wouldn't be my first choice in the apocalypse, but in every other situation, it wins.
