There is no better time to be getting into long range shooting than now. The options are endless and you can get a lot for your money these days. I'm not super well versed on all the budget options out there but what I can tell you is that the first long range bolt gun I got was a 20" barrelled Rem 700 AAC-SD in .308. I bedded it in a Boyd's stock and installed a DBM. I used it for the first season of matches I shot in the North West shooting out to about 1200 yards. It certainly wasn't ideal (ballistically) but I learned a ton both about shooting matches/building positions and about what I liked in a rifle. I still have that rifle although the factory barrel was long ago replaced with a few custom barrels and all that remains of it's original configuration is the action, bolt and scope rail. That's kind of the beauty of a R700, the available aftermarket is gigantic.
