Just wondering what's people's though on the best coyote gun? I am heavily leaning toward the 22-250 but wanted to get peoples thoughts on it first.

how far are your shots going to be on average? are you calling them? are you looking to save the pelts or are you just doign control work?

I call yotes, so my shots are pretty much all under 300 yards with most shots being from 80-200 yards. So I use a .204 shooting eithe 35gr or 40gr berger bullets. Does a great job and puts them down hard with zero fur damage. Hell they dont even bleed they just drop on the spot.

If I was to be out just blasting them and shooting off bait I would use a .243 with 60-70gr bullets.

Still might get a .243 for a back up gun.

I baught a R.A. XCR .223 this spring to use dor coyotes.Ive used 22-250 is a good choice as is the .223 but my go to coyote gun is a 25-06 with 85gr Nosler ballistic tip.It shoots very tight an I can reach out with the best of them.I call useing a fox pro.I also use a squeezing screemer that Ive had for years.

Depends how far your shots will be and if you are keeping the fur. I have a 22-250 which is great for coyotes but if they get too close it can be hard on fur. I also have a 204 that I haven't got a coyote with yet but it should be much more fur friendly. If you don't care about fur just about anything will work. Lot of guys like the 243 but any flat shooting cartridge would work. I shot one with a 7mm rem mag once but there isn't much left. I was thinking about a 243 wssm or a 257 weatherby might be a fun coyote gun.

I am looking for a coyote rifle as well, but I think I am going to go with a .243 in a M70 FWT so I can use if for deer.

I am calling them in, but in the spot I am at the shots will likely be up to 300 yards, also thinking about saving the pelts so that was why I was thinking 22 - 250 at that range.

The .204 is very pelt friendly dropped a dog at 302yards ranged. One hole in nothing coming out. I love my .204 for all small varmints I use it for beaver with the same results, even at the 60-100 yard only one hole. Very pelt friendly. Mine is a CZ 527 Varmint heavy barrel. I love the trigger on this rig

I shot my first coyote today on the way to the range to zero in my rifle. I hit him at about 250yds with a single shot from my new Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .204 ... he jumped straight up and tried to bite his tail, then hit the ground. 1 small entry wound, no exit.

.204 is one hell of a caliber if you wanna save pelts.

Best as in what? velocity? fur friendly? cheapest to load? Best in wind?

Way to many variables to say what's best. Ive owned .204, .223, 22-250, .243 all will get the job done and then some.

I've shot a few with my .223 with 55g core lokts and it has punched a big hole from about 100 yards or so. My .22-250 at close range and 55g v-max will punch massive holes, But I still like the .22-250 better for hunting. I'd decide on which gun you want first, then pick whatever caliber they have in stock in either .223, .22-250 or .243.

17 Rem for calling rifle.
Also have a 222 Rem, 222 Mag, 22-250, and a 220 Swift.

Ahh, the beauty of Quad Cabs, take a few with you. ;)

My goto is a 243 with 70 grainers. The problem is that it is NOT fur friendly. These are 275 to 350 yards or so. The one with no marks was hit straight on - no exit wound. All dropped instantly - no running or half-mooning.

204 Ruger with 32 grain Vmax. 40's work fine too. That is my all time favorite now.

as to gun, get what you like and can afford, but more expensive does NOT mean more accurate.

I got a question for you guys.

I want to go out a few times for yotes this year, but only have a 270. When you put big holes in em like sobo did in his pics. Can you even try to sell that pelt for anything? Why Im asking is because I wouldnt mind making it worth while to atleast cover fuel and some bullets.

thx

That's why I clarified....I shoot for pest control. For pelts, the 243 can reach them, but punches holes too. My 223 is lighter, cannot reach as for, but rarely pokes out the other side.

A .270 will work for yotes if you use the right bullet. I handload 110gr VMAX bullets for my .270 & they work great on yotes. One entrance wound with no exit! & that's at 3300 fps mv! With regular expanding hunting bullets you will make a mess of a coyote with the any rifle. Frangible varmint bullets are designed to be fur friendly.
