Had my best friend come up from Airdrie this weekend, and we planned in advance to go and do some coyote hunting. Had taken him predator hunting before and even put him on some but he's never connected on one.
So this Saturday I was going to make sure I took him to my best stands and made sure he gets one this weekend.
Saturday morning we were up at 7:30 and packed the truck and got on our way. We went to my first stand that we had been seeing coyotes but had never called one in. Knew where there den was. We had the light and wind in our favor. I set him and his savage 22-250 to where I expected the coyotes to come out. I went and set up the fox pro fury 2 and the mojo critter up 60 yards out in front of me and pointed it to the direction of where I knew the coyotes were and started with a coyote locator call. let that play for 2 mins, shut it off and waited. about a min later started to get calls back from right where I thought they would be. Went to the baby cottontail call and let her play for 5 mins and then shut it down.
Was going to wait about five more mins before I was going to start to play the baby cotton tail call and then all of a sudden BANG!!!.
I looked over at Chad and said "Did you get him?" He replies " I think so." Waited a bit and let the call go for 5 more mins and nothing else showed up. He said that there was two of them but he didn't get a shot at the second one and I was set up in another direction just in case another coyote came in from another spot.
So we went and checked out the spot at where the coyote was shot and lo and behold there was blood. Walked about 40 yards from where he shot it and there it was laying down next to a tree.
Awesome, first stand and we got our first dog and his first coyote ever. So we load him up and head to our next stand.
Get to the second stand and there were already 3 coyotes out in the field. Crap, so we try to sneak in there and get set up. try just about every call possible and no luck. called for 20 mins and nothing. I'm thinking no problem, cause I haven't even taken him to my best stand ever yet.
The next stand I'm taking him to has produced every time.
So we load up and drive to the next stand. We get there and set up the caller and get ourselves set up. I tell Chad how this stand usually plays out, and to let them come in as close as possible.
I fire up the fox pro and decide not to use any coyote vocalizations and go right to the bae bee cotton tail sound. start playing it and let her go for five mins. Nothing shows up. Decide to pause for five mins, and then I go back to the cotton tail sound and then at the 12 min mark Chad and I see three dogs slightly to our right at about 450 yards and they look BIG. I put the remote down and get ready and leave the cottontail call on. They start coming and Chad and I are close enough that we can whisper to each other. He wants to start shooting and I tell him to wait till they get closer. Now they are coming in on a string. finally they get to about twenty yards to the caller and the decoy and stop. I tell Chad to take them. I get behind my Remington sps varmint in .204 get him in my sights and squeeze off a round. both dogs turn around and start to trot away. Then I hear Chads gun go off and both dogs are still walking and then all of a sudden my dog drops and then Chads dog finally drops.
We are pumped, this is my first my double. But we look and the third dog is still standing at 450 yards and then another one apprears. So now there are 2 more dogs and they are just looking at their buddies laying there. I decide to let the cottontail call run and no way. Both these dogs start to come in. They keep coming in till they get to within 20 yards of the furthest dog from us. They stop and start smelling, then they start to head to the woods that was to our right. I tell Chad to take them out. Bang, Bang. We both shoot at about the same time My dog keeps going to the bushes but Chads drop right where he is standing. We can't believe it. we just took 3 dogs out of four. Best stand I have ever done in my three years of predator hunting.
We decide to go and retrieve our bounty and start to get closer to the dogs and I say to Chad "Wow these are big dogs, for sure these are some Alphas." We keep walking and keep getting closer and then it finally hits us. These aren't coyotes. These are Wolves. We can't believe this. We just called in four wolves using a cottontail calls.
Check out the pics. Still can't believe this happened. By far the best day of predator hunting ever.
