Just stumbled across a pretty sweet deal at tradex, this will be a "remember when" surplus deal.

What they have are CG63 barreled actions for under 200 bucks:eek:. All with very good to exc. bores.

The swedes built these 300 yrd competition rifles out of 96 mausers by tuning the trigger, decreasing lock time and adding a Heavy profile target barrel.

If you want to build the most accurate rifle you'll ever own for under 600 bucks start with this deal. scroll to bottom. these will be gone quick.

I had one of those years ago, passed it on to a friend. Great shooters actually. I find it pretty entertaining that everyone figures they need the latest "tacticool" rifles and accessories to shoot well. Try one of these, and you will find out how good of a shooter YOU are, after that you can think about upgrading. But I digress. - dan

My comment was actually that of approval - I guess it didn't come out that way!

LOL no worries my bad.

they are in 6.5x55.

I am only speculating based on my experience with 38 and 96 swedes but I strongly suspect these rifles will shoot as well and likely better then anything that can be built of modern components for under 2 grand (unless your mystic player!)

Just wanted to give guys interested in accurate rifles a heads up cause these barreled actions can be had for 1/3 of what the barrel is worth.

I figure 100 bucks on the bolt, 100 on mounting/buying a base and 50 towards a mystic player style homemade stock would turn these into a rifle you could'nt replace.

The only thing I suspect might turn some people off is that factory match ammo in that caliber isn't as widely available as some of the more popular military ones (.308, .223, .338, etc.)... So unless you can roll your own, you won't be able to achieve the full potential of this setup.

To a large extent that is a misconception. NORMA makes a pile of loads ranging from match grade target ammo to premiumish 156 grain spire point hunting ammo at about 35 dollars a box. Remington offers a 140 grain corelokt load many people like and are not at all hard to find. There are lots of other manufacturers making cartridges as well.
There has been a bit of resurgence in the 6.5 mm interest, so components are out there that could'nt be found not long ago.
All of the premium match and hunting bullet makers have .264 offerings.

I am thinking availability of factory loaded ammo should'nt be such a big deal for a guy building a precision rifle though.

cheers

Well I wish I lived where you did; here in Montreal, the two main dealers that stocked match grade BTHP ammo that I use (.308 Win.) are both all out in any brand and don't know when they'll be getting any in.

I can't imagine trying to get match ammo in "rarer" calibers around here.

I think it's a sign... You need to start reloading!
(You won't save much, but you'll shoot better ammo (and more of it) for the same price)

I've got a CG63 (from tradex) with an inexpensive Tasco 6-24x50mm mil-dot scope on it, and it shoots great. I actually shoot it at least as much as my semi's. Great rifle to get new shooters used to shooting at slightly longer ranges; mild recoil etc. You do have to be aware, as a realoader, that the tolerances in the CG63 are tighter than in regular swedish mausers, so ammo with sloppy shoulders or longer necks etc will not work in your rifle, but it's definitely not a problem once you know what you are doing.

How did you handle the straight bolt handle (no pun intended) with the way you mounted the scope? Did you bend the bolt handle or weld a commercial handle on? Inquiring minds want to know ;)
