Countdown to someone from the west making a comment on the ethics of shooting game on the move in 3, 2, 1.....

There is nothing wrong with shooting game on the move...if you have the skills. I like the setup they have in Sweden where you get to practice on moving targets at the rifle range. I suspect that for the vast majority of North American hunters the only time they ever shoot at a moving target with their rifles is at game.

Two guns for me also. Marlin 336 in 30-30 for doggin it, and I use the Tikka 30/06, when Im sitting in the treestand. I alternate every other day.

I have stopped using a centrefire rifle for dogging or stalking in the thick bush. My smoothbore shotgun has excellent accuracy with slugs out to 50 yards which is all I need for this style of hunting.
Putting the bead on the deer has been the fastest way of acquiring the target for shot placement rather than normal irons.
Not to mention a 1 ounce slug is devasting on a deer.

I know that it is hard to beat a .30-30, but after using a Mini 30 a couple of times, I would have to say that under 100 yards, the mini is faster.

Give me a reasonably light bolt action with perfect balance. Anybody who thinks they are too slow hasn't practiced.

Practice for as long and hard as you like and I bet my semi's are still faster... I like bolt actions for some tasks but thick bush and nervous deer don't seem to be their strong suit to me...

That's common knowledge for sure. And with all respect BS.

I'll take the balance, low mounted scope and great trigger of a bolt every time. How many times are you planning on missing that deer in the bush anyway! ;)

Missing? Who said anything about missing? I line up every year for the coveted "whole herd" tag. I don't want to let any of those guys get away while I'm cycling the bolt manually... :D

I have 6 rifles that I use for hunting the bush.

18" barreled Marlin 1895GS in 45-70
18.6" barreled RA XCR-L in 6.8 SPC
20" barreled Rem 700 LSS in 30-06
21" barreled Rem 700 LSS in 375RUM
21" barreled T/C Contender carbine in 375JDJ
22" barreled T/C Contender carbine in 45-70

RupZuk - Yes people do take shots at running deer with centrefire rifles in the deer camps in Central Ontario. More remarkably, people even practice their skills by shooting at moving targets.
Interesting,
What kind of moving target set-up do you have to practice on?
