It's a well known fact that a bullet from a .30-30 can only make it through one twig before it plummets to the ground.
Not entirely true as the 170gr projectiles will plow through absolutely anything where as the 150s will only pass through the one twig as you describe.

OTOH ..... It is common knowledge that a longer shotgun bbl will have more "reach" than a shorter one, and all my bullets "rise" after leaving the rifle bbl until the bullet slows and gravity finally kicks in. I haven't figured out what "punch" is yet. ;)

Anything with an adequate cartridge and a low powered scope. IMO running shots may not be fair to deer-sized game. Still-hunt and take one careful shot instead.

There was a gun digest article back in the late 1990s called 'The Myth of the Perfect Whitetail Rifle". The author liked bolt action carbines in .308. Me, I think it wouldn't matter whether you had a .30-30 or whatever else if you are comfortable with it.

just from experience short barreled levers work best for deer in 30-03 or 30-06. handy for brush. 45-70 should have been up there.

I had originally voted lever action 30-30 but just returned from Northwest Ontario where I used my CZ858 to hunt deer. What an awesome bush gun! IMHO it was a dream to carry and hunt with because it's so small and light. WMU 7B, although not in "Central Ontario" resembles 60 in terms of bush and terrain.

During this hunt, we are always pushing. No still hunting for deer at all.

The only drawback is that I was apprehensive about being seen with it, despite its being perfectly legal to hunt with.

I hunt with a mini-30 so thats how i have to vote, however, the Marlin levers are awesome, and one guy i hunt with uses a chinese sks and he's 4 for 4 in the last 4 seasons for what thats worth.

I think a bolt action carbine in .243 or .308 puts a low powered scope in a good spot. Then again, I like a .30-30 or .45-70 with a tiny scope as well.

A bolt action carbine in .308 can be about a half pound lighter than a Marlin 336 or 1895, and the cheek weld to the scope is better.

Remington pumps in 30-06 are a huge favorite at my camp. An assortment of lever actions in 30-30, 32 special, and occasionally 44mag usually attend as well. We run dogs so quick shots are a must. A bolt action with a red dot works great if you dont have to hit them while they're running

Our camp is full of 7600 30-06 pumps as well
