For making holes in the paper, o crap selection is huge and everyone likes different things. Most popular are .22lr, 9mm, 38Special, 40S&W and .45ACP

The best defence ( against paper of course... have you ever seen how bad
some of those paper cuts can be!?) load, is invariably the one that you shoot
the most consistently, with accuracy and comfort.;)
 
I like my own 200 gr LSWC hardcast. I shoot them accurately and they perform flawlessly in my 1911's. Thousands of paper targets have failed to withstand my onslaught to date. Having said that haven't had a need to shoot an assailant yet either and likely never will.

I also have a really neat .45 Colt shotshell load for snakes. Unfortunately, where I live there are only garter snakes and they are good guys. Drat!
 
Factory loaded .38 super are no more powerful than the 9MM and there are far more options in bullets and ammo is much cheaper and far more available.

A well built and properly performing 9mm round may expand to .45 calibre upon impact; but a .45 will never shrink.

Yeahhhhhh........ OK. (voice dripping with sarcasm)

I actually did penetration and expansion testing with both 9mm and .45.

Generally 9mm 147gr JHP's expand to about .630". .45 expands to around .720". So there is not as much difference as you might think.

As to penetration, the 9mm always penetrated deeper than the .45, by about 25%.

Wounding or "stopping" potential requires BOTH expansion AND penetration. One without the other is not good.

Interesting fact. I knew that depending on the factors involved that 9mm and .45 were close in performance to one another. This seems to back that up nicely.

When I was trying to decide the same thing (9mm vs. .45 for defence against paper) one thing ended up making up my mind- mag capacity. If I could have a 9mm with 13 to 17 rounds, metric makes more sense. However, as the powers that be have determined I can't, I figured I would get the biggest round I could, hence the .45. While I admit that bigger isn't always better as Suputin has shown ballistically, it seldom hurts matters.

Bottom line is go with what you are happy with- or better yet own one of each (my eventual plan):D
