Sorry, I just have to..... :p

Theyre all pretty ass and clumsy.

Best would be an ak mag or ar mag conversion, but both of those involve some gunsmithing

^ ^ ^ Simple answer instead of 'Wishes' - I've got 6x of 'em, never even cleaned 'em for 7-8 years and still running fine !!!
And they work in wood stocks - As Well as in the Tapco Stocks. Getting hard to find and way more pricey than 5-years ago.
You might have to 'hit the wood' with a file or rasp, depending on which version of 'wood' you've got. I've put them into Chinese & Russian stocks.

did you have to do some filing or did they fit fine the first time?

Please let us know - 6 of what mags did you get and how are they working?

GeoffB - They were all the Tapco 5/20 duckbills. In the Chinese wood stock I had to file a tiny bit of wood off the stock inlet sides so the would insert easier, w/o needing force. As I said, all are working fine with NO Probs at all. I have the Tapco Stock so they fit perfectly. I have NOT done the "Drop-free Mod" so the bolt needs to be locked open. And I did the mod to the mag 'edges ', rounding them a tiny bit with a file to allow smoother insertion. Here's a link to YT review where I made the '4-year old' comment as "fasteddie". In " 1) and 2) " I detailed my mods to the mags. And other stuff re SKS.
PS- I made the Post #11 in reply to Post 9 but Exoticdancerclips beat me by One minute. the arrows would have made sense then ;)
ALSO, there is lots of SKS info on sksboards .com and votefordavid as well.

You always have to file the stock, wood or plastic, some more than others. You have to take the stock off the receiver so you have full access, does not work with an assembled rifle. I never had to round the edges. Sometimes the mag release is too stiff and it has to be fitted or the magazine has to be filed at the catch. I am sure there are videos.

My russian sks with wood stock didn't require any modification to fit tapco mags. Was a bit tight at first but after about 10 times taking it in and out it was fine and fit well. Tapco 5/20 have worked well for me. No issues with reliability.

I'd recommend to stay away from Promags, they suck! Pretty much any/all promags I've ever had, have been shiit. Maybe their newer stuff is better? The lips broke off one I had, I still have that busted mag lol They have the metal one as well, it looks 'kool' but is a jam-o-matic.{had one as well} However, I do like the profile of their 5 rounder they make. {it may be a 5/10}
I think they're the only ones with a SKS mag in a smaller profile. I'd like one, not sure if it's more reliable than their 5/30's though.
Tapco are good quality.

Archangel mags are the only way to go imo. Done a bunch of them and they’re fantastic. Some rifles require more mods than others.
FYI.

I only have matching non refurbs or light refurbs in my crates of SKS rifles.

I didn’t convert any of mine. Only did it for others who were going to do it anyway but didn’t know how. Found that the Archangel mags with the lever release on the mag just awesome.
