best do-all calibre

Truthfully, if I were limited to one "do-it-all" rifle - I (shudder) would pick (shudder) a Marlin (shudder) Guide gun in 45-70. Good for anything that moves, as long as it's close.

I've gotta go wash the lever gun off.........

What a rediculous concept... one rifle to do it all.
You will need at least three... and two should be short mags.

wow, you're smart.:D (its spelled ridiculous). at any rate, its a "what if question", so no need to be a prick about it.

Actually it IS spelled "REDICULOUS".

REDICULOUS
adj.

Describing of or pretaining too a useless rhetorical internet question.

Oh and the answer (as always) to this paticular Rediculous question is : the Swede.

my dictionaries say otherwise. i've never heard of anyone being rediculed.

urban dictionary online: Rediculous- the alarmingly common misspelling of ridiculous.

hey, you .30 cal guys, anybody shoot a 300 h&h? looks like a nice cart.

just wanting to get opinions on what people think is the best do it all calibre, as in, if you could only have one rifle to hunt deer size game and up, what would you choose? personally, I don't think one can do much better than a .350 rem mag or similar.
i'm not afraid to do it with less, but, the 338 would be my choice for "everything"

Make mine a .30-06, please... :p

Me thinks he was being sarcastic :p

One gun to rule them all

The question really depends on what you're going to hunt most often. When I bought my first (and only) centrefire a couple years back I knew I'd need something that could handle it all. But I don't hunt moose and elk every year, while I do hunt sheep and deer every year. So, the one ideal gun was a fairly light .270 wsm. Enough punch for moose, elk and bear with good bullets, enough reach for sheep, and just fine for whitetail. If I was going to hunt elk every year, that ideal gun would have been a 30-06 or another fast .30, but I think it's a little misguided - when you can only afford one rifle - to buy a gun based on what you might one day need instead of what you need every year. I can make the short mag work for moose every 4 years, so in this case, while the wsm isn't exactly the ideal for every species on the continent, it is the ideal for my specific situation.

And there you go! it sounds just right!!:D :D

.308 / 7.62

Will do anything a Rifleman asks, in a short-actioned, handy rifle.

If after specialized game, whether mountain goat, gopher or water buffalo, then a speacilized rifle would better fill the need.

I've dropped moose at 300 meters and men further than that, and never felt under gunned with a .308!

Cheers,

Ben

Why hasn't any one said the .50 BMG??? It could be loaded up light for oh say mice...and heavy loads for the good ol tyrannosaurus rex..Gee one calibre does it all...
