Best email ever (gophers)

So, spent all day Saturday driving back to cowtown from the Island. Slept in a bit this morning, then made it out to the Aunt and Uncle's place this afternoon.

Spent a lot of time drinking coffee and swapping the same old lies, and a couple of new ones. It was a bit cold and windy, so they weren't really active, but still tagged 14 of them in a little over an hour of just walking around.

Only 986 more to go.

The 795 worked great - much happier with it than I ever was with the Ruger. Can't quite reach out like I can with my CZ 452 and CCI Quick Shots (1640fps SHP), but was able to make some 50 yard shots, even in the wind, without to much challenge with Remington Golden Bullets. The rifle has been jam-free, even with cheap bulk ammo and the ProMag 25 rounders. I think I'll invest in a nice wood stock for it to dress it up a bit - and all told it'll still be cheaper than a stock Ruger.

On warm, calm days, I can easily see getting a few 150-200 gopher days in later this spring and in the summer. Lots of fresh holes and mounds out there, looks like they didn't suffer any winter die off - not surprising, given how mild the winter was around here.

Good stuff. Popped off a few at 100yds out there resting my Model 60. But now thinking of a 795 because of magazines rather than tube feed. Loading and unloading is easier. But my Model 60 is so pretty with the laminated stock. What to do. Maybe have both. Think the sun will be out today so more gophers. Leave some breeding stock though!

Oh happy days! I sure hope they're out in full force in SK this year too. My recently acquired CZ 452 Varmint in .22lr and 527 Varmint in .17 Hornet are just itching to get to the field and notch their first gopher kills!

In fact, I think it's range day tomorrow. Make sure the .17 is still lined up and ready to rock!

To any farmers/ranchers in SK, if you have a severe gopher problem I don't mind making the drive, even a long drive, to help you thin the population. :)

Thinking of going Boyds for the 795... Such a nice look to their laminated stocks.

My one and only grievance with the 795 is the Trigger. Spongy and a fair bit of take-up, and the break isn't as predictable as I would like. I'm going to take a look at the series of videos on 795 trigger jobs, and then figure whether I'll do a trigger job myself, or look around for an aftermarket kit.

My CZ 452 with the YoDave kit has ruined me for factory triggers in pretty much any rifle.

Truth. My Aunt and Uncle lost about 20-25 acres to the little turds a few years ago, they moved in from a neighboring pasture and chewed the canola down to moonscape. That's $$ gone for them.

They go into an an absolute feeding frenzy on canola. It's interesting to watch. Sometimes there is more of a green mist than a red mist made with the .22-250

Argh... Long weekend coming up, and the forecast is miserable.

I guess I'll just have to spend the whole weekend indoors... At the Easter Gun Show.
