Best entry level Precision rifle OTTB?

When I graduate I want to treat myself to a new gun once I (hopefully) land a half-decent job.

I was talking to a friend of mine about this.

I like the Remmy 700 VLS but he was saying how Savages are more accurate out of the box...
Then I asked about Tikka and he said they were on par with Savage but you had to spend more green.
Anyway what is your opinion of the best "precision" rifle out of the box for 1000 or under? CZ is apparently a big contender.

Do the "Varmint" models make the best ones, with their thick, long barrels? Or?

Any reviews of the VLS? Or is Remmy playing catchup?

I'm thinking to go .308 Win...I already have an LSS "mountain" rifle with a 22" barrel in 30-06...would that one be a lost cause when compared to a "precision" gun?
 
There's another thread showing the .4MOA groupings his stock 700 Varmint got. I'm personally a Remington fan, but the Remington vs. Savage battle goes on and on.

Remington is still my favorite. I just installed a barrel on a CZ600 and I was not impressed with the action at all. No where close to the quality of the older Brno's.
 
We tend to pick up the Sportcos here for guys wanting entry level TR rifles, and you can scope them easily for precision or F class stuff.
"entry level" is a relative thing, as they will still win with the right driver behind them.
They can be had for less than $500 with a good set of irons on them....

I can't comment on the Rem's as I don't own one. But I wouldn't hesitate to
buy one either.
I do know about the Savages.
My bro has a FP model, heavy bbl. 24" I think, and cost right around the $600
mark or just over when he bought it. Mounted a cheapO tasco scope on top.
This was, and still is his 'entry' level rifle and was less than $800 when done.
And best of all, it's SMOKE'N accurate! For that kind of set-up, it shoots
sub MOA's and can give my Swiss Arms SHR with NightForce a run for it's money. (hasn't beat me, but we'd both expect a $4500+ rig to group a tad bit better)
From what I've seen, Savage is right on when it comes to cost vs. accuracy.
 
the savages have been producing exceptionaly accurate varmint and heavy barreled rifles off the shelf for quite some time many have put them on par with remingtons and they are half the price in most cases
 
What's the everyones take on the Tikka T3 Super Varmint in .223?

I was at the local gun shop today and saw one listed for 1800, I wasn't expecting such a high price tag on it.

the butt of the gun just felt like cheap hollow plastic.

Any particular models? I've seen some for maybe 100$ less...I like the 12VLP but it doesn't come in .308 apparently.

I can not find any hint that CZ EVER made a CZ600.... So what action are you actually talking about?

I have a CZ550 in 22-250 and the action is nicer then any remington I have handled.

Or go into a gun shop and look at page 20 of Remington Catalog
Model 700 XCR Tactical, 26" flutted stainless, B&C stock bedded I know Epp's have them on order end of May approximately just over $1000 .223,308 & 300wm only calibers available, this is as close to getting a custom gun at a fair price.

If you could get your hands on one of this guy's builds you would be lucky. I bought second hand a remington built by him atleast 15 years ago which is able to shoot into .3 MOA. I paid 700 shipped from an elderly gentleman.
