Just got back from an estate sale down the road from my house here in Ottawa. I'm speechless! $100 each for all these beauties!!! All are matching (except for the non-matching but correct nosecap on the SMLE MkI), all bores are nice, and all look to bee old guns, probably bought 20 or more years ago...

Keep watching those newspaper classifieds folks! That's how I found this sale...

From left to right:
- 1943 Dispersal MkIII* with '44 MeCo sling
- 1943 GRI MkIII*
- 1934 RFI MkIII
- 1920's era BSA Volunteer Pattern MkIII
- 1904 Enfield MkI E.Y. with 1916 dated sling
- 1962 RFI MkIII* G.F.

Nice find...some people don't know what they have at these sales. I've seen the reverse too though where someone has an old Poisson Maggot and think it must be worth something cause it was "in the war".

So you were crouched in a sprinter's position waiting for the first moment to go to house down the street, and couldn't make it to EOHC?

Actually, I couldn't go to EOHC b/c my wife had to work so I got loaded with bringing my daughter to her ballet recital.

Family first... I guess. :(

OK, OK....

I'll come clean. :nest:

I didn't get these at an estate sale for $100 each

Actually, I was taking this pic for the January Purchases thread. This is just a group photo of the SMLE's I've gotten over the last 3 months or so.

It's actually not a complete photo as there is still a WW1 era Canadian issue MkIII* en-route to me. The info about the guns themselves is accurate with the exception that two of the guns are more recent imports from P&S. All are original matching pieces (except the one nosecap I noted) and none are restored sporters.

Was pretty funny watching you guys pant over story though! ;) :D

It's funny, I had stopped collecting Enfields for a number of years... then this.

Dog...

How come so many are without the brass discs on the butt? Are they Australian or WW2 assembled? Butts replaced?

I've never found anything good at auctions or estate sales. Even if guns are listed, they are usually crappy and sell for way too much. But that doesn't stop me from going.

The various factories stopped fitting brass discs at the end of WW2. If you look at the manufacture dates I listed, the rest of the guns are made well after that. The 1934 has a marking disc stock that the hole is filled with a wood blank. It's probably a WW1 era spare butt that was used later in production.

I guy I know did some home renovations for an old lady who, after asking if he hunted, offered a couple of guns in partial payment for his work. This was just prior to Bill C-68 and many older people who were gun owners were worried about being prosecuted for unregistered firearms.

He ended up with a pair of Winchester 94's. One an Alberta Diamond Jubilee and a matching Saskatchewan Diamond Jubilee.

I don't know what they are worth but the Saskatchewan Diamond Jubilee that I have seen is in mint condition. The wood on that rifle is the best I have ever seen, better than that found on Kimber or Cooper rifles.

I don't know how much work he did for the lady but I always ask him if he can sleep at night.

Nice find...some people don't know what they have at these sales.

And some people see no reason to tell them...

Saw this debate in another forum recently.

All depends on your conscience: if you'd be happy having the same thing happen to your own relatives, then go for it.

On the other hand, better than seeing them all turned in for destruction.

OK, now I read the whole thread...but the point's worth making.

Man - you got my heart rate going there.

I did however get put on the scent of a Gew 98 that way once. A guy I met at the gun store mentioned having seen it in a very small circulation newspaper WTS add. He gave me his number, I called him when he was phone, he found the newspaper, I got the number, and got a Gew 98 with a bayo for a very reasonable price (but not rediculously low, the seller knew his mausers ;))
