best expanding bullets?

Looking to do some minor reloading for the .308 and wanted to make some coyote rounds.

I wanted something that has the best expansion possible for the 308 so that when the bullet hits it hits hard and expands fast.
I bought some remington core-lokt (spelling?) cartridges from canadian tire at 25$ for a box of 20. They sounded good and when I checked them out I realized that it was really just a FMJ spitzer that had the tip cut/ground off about 2mm. wow...
I really don't know much about bullets, but I was wondering what some of the best stuff out there is? A nice huge hollow point with a fake plastic tip for feeding would be nice, but some guidance on the subject would be great.

Any suggestions?

Your remington core-lokt, particularly if they are round nose, will actually expand very quickly and deliver lots of energy to your target very quickly. Your M14 might not like RN bullets however.

You might want to look into some .308 dia VMAX's - designed to do exactly what you want. I doubt that you will be able to hit a coyote with your .308, no matter what you shoot, and not have some pretty big exit holes however. It seems unlikely to me that even something like the VMAX is going to completely break apart and save you an exit wound on an animal the size of a coyote.

You might want to check out some TNT's as well, I'm pretty sure Speer makes them. Fast expanding varmint bullet.

Barnes TTSX/TSX are nice. Kind of pricey but great expansion and weight retention.

:agree:I've tested these after reloading and they work the best, they are pricey, but they'll do exactly what they're intended, and what you're looking for. This should be moved to the proper category.

Have killed lots of coyotes with my M305 firing 110gr vmax. Enough energy though that there is usually a monster exit wound...not very fur friendly!

+1 on the V-Max. Not for deer sized animals tho. I wouldn't even think about premium bullets like the Nosler Partitions or the Barnes bullets until you were thinking of elk or larger.

Agree that they are probably overkill for deer, but I would def use premium on moose. Also, I kinda figure, sighting in for one load is better than many, and even at 70 cents a bullet, why not shoot premium? Cheapest part of your hunt.
