Best F-Class Calibre for open competition

338 LM is Ok for shooting steel but it’s not small group shooter and F CLASS is all about Shooting small groups . RJ

I'm an F T/R guy, but if I were to ever go open, then I'd go with a 284 chamber. 80% to 90% I of the guys I know at Nokomis in Open seem to use since its tried, tested, and true.

l believe 338 LM is not allowed under the f class rules (8 mm maximum).
Even if it was its way to expensive to shoot
and due to no muzzle break being allowed in f class world this makes it uncomfortable for shooting all day.

Don't get me wrong it a great caliber for long range shooting but not for F Class discipline.

Every statement in this post is indeed true. Caliber is limited to 8mm for competition.

Your club/range of choice might allow you to shoot a 338 LM (sans muzzle brake) at a match... but you will effectively be "competing with yourself" and your score will not count towards the match results and National Standing.

284win is the easy button for long range F Open, mid range people may use 6 Dasher like caliber.

Barrels are an expendable item in this game, but there are a whole family of cartridges with a .473 bolt face and 2.8 inches length so it's possible to start in 6.5 CM and once your apprenticeship barrel loses accuracy order a .284 Win barrel, or get the TR bug and go .308 or maybe peruse the rest of that family's options.

Geez a whole YEAR plus now with no ADDs to this thread - SO i just bought a new KS Arms 284 Barrel 1.250 straight axle shaft 8.5 twist 5R Will finish at 30 " Plus SO its only gonna be a 1000 yard F Open rifle and i already have a 284 Win i'm thinking i might have a 7 PRC built - and NOT the short 7-6.5 PRC - the REAL 7 PRC - 184 - 190 Berger Hybrid target bullets at around a Easy 2950 - 3000 so barrel life will still be decent -

But the 7-6.5 PRC is a GREAT cartridge - lots of Winners using it now - ADG makes the proper HS brass too

that bent barrel you got would be better suited to a 7mm-08AI, use lapau Palma brass and the new sierra 175 grain matchking, if that doesn't light your panties on fire, you can rent my 7mm creedmoor chamber reamer and go full potato
