best factory ammo for tight 200 yard groups with a savage 10fcp .308

Without a spotter, then it becomes much more difficult as higher magnification equals more problem with mirage as shotgunjoe just pointed out.

Speak for yourselves, I rarely dial my 42x back further than 25x in heavy mirage.

When the mirage is light (or winds are blowing the mirage away) the higher power scope really helps you zone in on the target so you can better place your shot.

All this info is great. I went to WSS to pick up some federal gold match on the weekend but they were out. So I spent the day playing around with my .22 at 100 yards. It is pretty interesting/cheap to play with the .22 at 100. Any tips for good .22 ammo out to 100yards? I took the advice about the parallax as well and did some playing around. The spot on my scope that is marked with the yardage is definitely not the best spot for it to be to not make my cross hairs move when I move my head. That I am sure will help when I take the .308 out. Also I thought I was broke and not able to get into re-loading until yesterday at university when a representative came in and told everyone in my class that our course tuition was being refunded by the government and they are going to pay for the course for us. So keep the good information coming because it looks like I am going to be able to afford to put it to good use.

Federal SMK 175gr. is what I use out to 1000yards. It is impressive at every distance. The 168gr. version may work better in your rifle for what you want, but don't push them past 850-900yards as they tend to become unstable.

Have a good supply of Lapua's as well, 170gr. Lockbase. I am quite sure these would be every bit as good in my rifle. I have tried nearly every match bullet recently at the range and my rifle likes Hornady 168's and SMK's from Federal the best, all loads were sub .50MOA at 100yards from the bench, some of the ragged little holes were just a bit bigger in some loads. All basically one hole, five round groups.

Shoot a variety of loads if you can, your rifle may like something the best. I would start with the Federal's and work my way through the list of match ammo that is on the market.

Currently I am not reloading but plan to once finished my current session of trade school. So before that there is nothing stopping me from dropping a little $$ here and there on factory ammo to go experiment with. I have grown bored with the standard 100 yard groups and am trying to get some good groups at 200 yards. I am using a heavy barrel savage .308 10fcp with the HS precision stock. It has a RH 1:10" twist and I am wondering if any of us have found a decent factory ammo that preforms well at 200 yards? If so what brand and weight bullet are you flinging out there that are putting a smile on your face?

If you can get your hands on some RUAG you won't be disappointed. I was using BULK American Eagle boat tail 160 grain, nothing fancy and shooting 3/4" groups at 200M. your gun should really be giving you good groups at that range. what do you have on it for an optic? as that makes more of a difference than most give credit for. If you have a low quality optic you may not group well with anything.
