Best first time revolver?

Your teasing people with the 625 S&W. They are unobtainable, unless you want to pay a big price. Same as the S&W 610. Made out of unobtainum alloy. Great guns though. If you get your hands on one don't sell it/them. Maybe they will become available new at some point, as gun sales slow in post Obamamama years. Heres hoping. The moon clips are a PITA but work, the Rugers use a different technology and the Rugers work without moon clips. You need a tool to use the moon clips, but I am told that a speed loader will replace the moon clips.

rustynut1…the metal moon clips are a PITA and requires strong fingers or a tool to remove the casings.
The ones in the pic are polymer and are very easy to load/unload without the use of a tool and very inexpensive to buy. They are available thru the internet and I highly recommend them if you're in the market for some.

I have tools for both guns but will look into the plastic moon clips. The metal ones are really hard to unload with out a tool. I have never actually used a tool just my hands but it is a bear. Have to try the tools sooner or later.

A loading/unloading tool is easy to make from a short length of steel tubing. Such a tool comes with the Alpha Project guns. And there's commercial versions as well.

It's basically just a tube with a step cut and filed in the end. With a cap on one end and cut to the right length it'll hold the ammo for simply pushing straight in to load and the step on the mouth works to lever out the empties when the tool is given a light twist.

Serious competitive revolver shooters don't use polymer moonclips. In fact, most use these (and they're NOT cheap; the good ones are $7.50 EACH!):

Shot a 686 the other day along with a hot loaded .44 mag. The .44 rattled my teeth when I didn't have my jaw clinched!

After shooting the beautiful 686 it sealed the deal for me. Now I just have to wait for a nice price to pop up on the EE.

There is three solutions here. Purchase a 44 mag with a 6 to 8 inch barrel that has a full underlug.
Or, maybe reload mid-range handloads. Or, just do both.

perhaps?

Smith&Wesson 686 would rattle more than just your teeth if you managed to chamber 44Mag in it.
S&W 629 might be better choice for those that shoot 44Mag. ;)

S&W 686 is chambered in .357Mag, and 38Spl may be used as well.

my first wheel gun is the Ruger GP100 buled with the short barrel.
LOVE IT!

glad i picked it up.
i know its not as nice as a S&W but it was a lot less and it was the perfect introduction to the wheel guns.
plus it has the added bonus that my wife really likes to shoot it!

now that i have had it for a few years and have had a chance to try a few others when at the range im gonna save up and pick up a S&W PC gun in stainless.

I should have thrown some commons in that post. I shot a 686 and another Smith chambered in .44.
