Best for safety - bear gun

For close range hard to beat a shotgun with slugs, if your rifle is scoped it will be harder to put proper bullet placement in but with a little distance it wiil do the job just fine.

Bear bangers and bear spray are the very best defence period. Either the whistle or the crack cartridges work wonders, just make sure the bear is at least 20yds away when you let them off. Inside of 30' or so the spray is SUPER effective, you just have to have the guts to wait for the bear to get up close and personal.

Finally, a thread to discuss bear defense. CGN has been waiting years for someone to broach this tender subject.

Yeah, but this one's in the Newbie FAQ section. I mean come on, at least that's original.

In regards to the subject in question:

If you believe that movies are accurate depictions of real life (Which I blindly do), you should feed it the black guy from lost, and then kill it with a sharpened stick.

OH YEAH!, and bring Alec Baldwin.

Experience:D 3 bear charges in the last few years including one 3 weeks ago by a sow when the dogs and myself accidentally got ourselves between her and her cubs. I also had one when I was predator calling a couple of years ago, very scary but the banger scared the living s**t out of it. Also the place where I learned the minimum distance to use a bear banger at as the bear ran right by me when the banger went off behind him. I live in the Okanagan above a lot of orchards and see bears at least a couple of times a week and have interactions with them all the time while out hiking with the dogs or hunting coyotes or big game.
Very few of us can carry a sidearm while out hunting and of the few that can how many practice snap shooting at simulated charging targets with full bore loads? Most bear defence shotguns are the extra firearm and usually on your shoulder or tucked in the pack so not readily accessible. A bear banger fits in your pocket and bear spray on your belt in a pouch, both readily accessible. Bear charges happen in seconds or they should not happen at all because you should then have time to avoid the encounter altogether. How many people practice snap shooting of their shotgun at simulated charging targets? I would hazard a guess, not too many. Also carrying a shotgun may make some people a little complacent around bears which is not good at all. IMHO the spray and bangers are all anyone needs if they are alert and observant in the woods.
You also have to know that if you do shoot a bear and the authorities find out you are going to have a tough time proving the bear needed to die. Especially if you are carrying an extra gun just to kill bears that bug you and no method to just scare them off. My $.02

Just wondering what firearm most would consider best for Grizzly bear, for times when hunting in areas where they are? I know in most cases most bears will go in the opposite direction, but just "in case" they decide to harm me, I thought having something other than just my 7mm Mag hunting rifle might be a wise investment!

So far, only once have I been meandering up a mountain trail to find a Grizzly laying about 10' off the trail....where I decided to stop, and head back from where I came from, rather than test out the situation. I've seen what a Grizzly can do to big game, and certainly wouldn't want to "hope" my 7mm would put it down, thus the thought of asking what most opinions might be for a similar situation!
I'm thinking some kind of shortened 12 gauge, but I've never owned a shotgun in my life, so would this be the best choice? I'm thinking "weight" here, as I'm already packing my 7mm.
Or, a pistol of some kind?

Those big bruins are huge, and are a powerful beast, so I appreciate any advice/comments you might have.

Thanks.

This one is easy. Trade in your 7mm for a .338WM...problem solved.

.44 magnum or 460 or 500wsm

I carry a .44. Magnum in a saddle holster whenever i go hunting when your skinning the meat you will never get a shot off with a bolt action rifle in time! With a holstered handgun you got a better chance

In BC it is illegal, as I understand it, to kill a bear to protect your kill. If threatened you should leave your kill and walk away. You can only kill it if it outright attacks you, not just threatens you to try to take your kill. You can fire warning shots but not shoot the bear. That is straight from a CO a few years ago but he didn't quote exact chapter and verse in the regs so I just assume he was telling the truth. Of course if you have a tag and it is open season that would be different.
