Best fox calibres?

I agree with all the guys that said .222; it was the load of choice in our part of the province for fox right up to the '80s and the comonizing of the the .223.

Still hard to beat for fox and coyote size game. Groundhogs too.

I’m looking at getting a rifle for foxes and coyotes.

I’m stuck on 17 HMR or 22 WMR. Maybe a 22 Hornet.

Due to the price of ammo, I’d like to avoid the 220 Swift, 223, 222, 22-250, etc.

Do you guys think that 17 HMR or 22 WMR would be enough for foxes and coyotes? Average range that I’ve taken them at is from 75-125 ish yards.

Thanks!

Consider overbore ratio. i.e. bullet diameter to case capacity. How far & flat do you want to be able to shoot? Avoid the barrel burning cartridges. Centerfire can be cost effective if you reload. A lee hand primer, lee hand press, funnel, calipers and jeweler scale can get you started.

Hard to beat .222 or .243 for this application.
