Well it is plus 19 today in Okotoks, and I'm getting the itch to get out and start banging some new loads. I recently purchased a 308 win. and have all the loads made-up using 150 grain NBT and three different powders. Thought that I would start a thread on the best three shot group from your hunting firearm. Mine came from a model 52 Cooper, 6.5x284 Norma, and my son's from a model 56 Cooper, 7mm STW.

Shot one shot with each rifle in preparation for an annual hunt. A .270 Winchester, and .280 Remington and a .338 Winchester Magnum.

1.065 - .142 - .169 = 0.754

First up is a 3 shot grouping 100y with a Custom Marlin 336xlr in 30-30 I built and a 1-4 Leupold

Second is a 3 shot group (with a 4th flyer) from a Marlin 444P 100y using Skinner peep sights (this one blew me away)

My best group of my life was with my Anschutz 1576 .308 sporter, old style 155 Palma Match, 47 grains of 4064, 210 Match and all bottled up in unfired Federal Gold Metal Match. At the time not knowing any better I subtracted the bullet diameter from the hole instead using the actual size of a bullet hole in the paper but it worked out to .012". There were 5 other groups on that same target, few of which went over 1/4" and that not by much.I was pretty proud of that at the time.

I suppose I could reverse engineer that and come up with a correct number, but too much has changed since then. First the load was too hot for brass life anyway. Second, I've learned that the best 3 shot group means almost nothing, and the average not a lot more. Do you really think that a 1/2" 3 shot group means that you can put the rest of the box into the same hole? The worst group is probably a better indicator of what the gun/load can do long term.

Then there's the sad truth that great 100 yard groups are no guarantee of great groups farther out. I watched way too many "great loads" fall apart and way too many average loads stay together to believe that there is any substitute for shooting at the long distances, if long distance performance is the goal.

My best groupings for a hunting rifle all remain one shot, something like this one would represent my idea of best hunting rifle group. ;) That said, below is a pic of my best 1,000 yard effort at hitting a standard piece of printer paper within five rounds during one of our milsurp matches, with a Krieger barreled Garand and iron National Match sights. Didn't quite get it, next time. Took bear with the Garand so qualifies in my eyes.

I have a few results I've been well pleased with, one of which was/is with my Savage 112BVSS in .25-06.

And another, with my model 65DL Schultz & Larsen in .308NM

Congrats to some of you and results you've posted. Definately a step or two above my accomplishments. :)Well done guys.

Shot a 0.25" edge to edge five shot group with a Savage .17 HM2... that is 0.075" CTC... pretty darn small... not likely to do that again with five rounds.
