Best grouse hunting .22 ammo

Well I normally use a shotgun for grouse but took out my 10/22 today to switch it up. I picked up some cci mini mags 22lr-mp hollow points I find a nice size ruffy take the shot and hit the chest. I walk over and there is a whole the size of a baseball on the exit. I was floored, I packed up and left I wasn't shooting anything els with that ammo. Was it because it was hollow pointed? I've shot grouse with that dirty Remington thunderbolt ammo and it just put a hole through the Breast the size of the .22 bullet. But I wanted to try something cleaner with copper plated, don't like the idea of lead touching the meat. Anyways what do you guys recommend for grouse hunting that if I hit the cheat it isn't going to ruin everything.

Baseball size exit hole?
 
Ya the whole left side of the breast was mashed looked like someone mashed up some jello. Yes I know head shots are the way to go but I hit low.
 
Head shots don't waste the meat.. my grandmother would use lead longs (sub sonic ammo) reason for it was it didn't make so much of a mess she used to to shoot pests ect.
 
Try standard loads with 40 gr solids they punch a nice hole very little waste and do the job, as mentioned head shots are best or just at the base of the neck I find to work excellent:))
 
CCI Minimags 40gn Round Nose ... work great in my 10/22 for grouse/partridge. I switch them up to 36gn Hollow Points when I go after wabbits :D

That and no farther han 12 inches away.
It might work better in an old shot out barrel,
because when you send a charge of loose shot down a rifled
barrel, centrifical force will make it want to go out in a wide fan when exiting barrel.
 
For head shots I pick whatever shoots the best in my gun. Usually its a target round like Lapua or RWS. It must be accurate enough to have all the bullets touching at 20 yards or I won't take it out. You need that edge if you have any hope of picking one off in the head at 50 yards with an offhand shot which is not that easy to do, especially for most people.
 
.22 birdshot works well on mice up to 10ft... check out the pattern on a piece of cardboard and you'll get an idea of 'pattern spread' and penetration.
