Best gun for coyote protection on farm?

I like the small CF stuff, like the Hornet, Bee, 25-20, 221 FB, etc. I assume she's not going to hunt the things, but rather take shots of opportunity. Therefore, long range fire-belchers are out, ad are the 223's & larger due to noise (I suspect there won't be any hearing protection used). The rimfires are OK for really short shots (50 yards or so) if placed well, but I'd avoid them as they tend to require a higher level of expertise.

A friend of mine owns a horse rescue. She also has about 25 chickens for eggs. Every year when the weather starts to get cold the local coyote population comes to her farm regularly for dinner...

The gun will be stored in a locked locker in the barn, so it'll have to be heavy duty and "rust resistant", lol...

x2 for an NEF Handi-Rifle in .22 Hornet and fitted with a low-power scope, as long as distances are likely to be moderate. (Will she really be making 150-yard shots on the critters?) Inexpensive, accurate enough, light, and easy on the ears of shooter and neighbours alike. Maybe some sort of "tactical" light could be fitted for night-time use, using an LED or Pelican flashlight and a home-made clamp arrangement, to avoid the cost of a real "tac" light.

A .204 or Hornet Ruger bolt action would probably be even better but this would put the price up quite a bit, as would a Marlin 1894 in .357 mag., which would be noisier as well.

If the barn has AC power, a 40 or 60-watt bulb in the bottom of the locker is a cheap way to keep things warm and dry. (Given Ontario winters, the locker should probably be made of wood and insulated!)
