best gun for deer

Best luck I've had was 30-30 Winchester, under 100 yds they just tip over with very little trimming to do. 25-06 ruins the front shoulder, 7mm Rem Mag ruins both shoulders.
So if I was a young man I'd reload 308 Win 150-170 round nose bullets slowed down a bit for deer, 170-180 loaded up for moose and 130-165 fast for coyotes. Then load cast for rabbits at 22 lr velocity for rabbits.
Then figure out which action you want, that all work so it's your preference. Then pull up any gun that's offered and see how it fits.
Iron sights to 75yds, peep to 150yds and a scope beyond.
If I had to do it again I'd probably buy a Remington pump for my first gun.
But given the price I'd seriously consider a Sako L579 bolt action from Intersurplus in 308win or 6.5x55.

Saskatchewan laws are quite different now.
Ok. Thanks for the update. I'll have to check with the AB regs when the 2025 ones are published - the quote I provided apparently hasn't been updated (or perhaps the change hasn't become law, yet) but whatever the case, I still like my 6.5Swede and the .308 Win.

Dude, you dont gotta be a ####. How about give some advice. How about stop being a gun snob?
I'been here for a long time....... we observe patterns of behavior over the years and there have been so many of these very odd questions from brand new sign ups that most of the time I figure they are just banned members coming back trying to troll the membership.
I wasn't trying to be a #### but I do have a bit of a twisted sense of humor and the question in the OP comes off as a non gun owner asking an ill presented question so I decided to have fun with it.
It's not the first time a thread has gone this way and it won't be the last.
I spent many years here giving helpful advice in the battle rifle forums and elsewhere...... sadly those days are gone and it's not my fault.

If the question was "what's your favorite deer rifle and cartridge?" I would have taken that as a serious question from a fellow gun owner.

Fair enough. The question still stands. I have a Savage hog hunter in 308 with a 21" barrel. Won't be shooting over 200 yards. I went 308 for a few reasons. Easy to source ammo. Can take down most North American game. I bought a MDT field stock and put the action and barrel on that. Weighs around 7-8 lbs. Put a Vortex hog hunter 3-12 50mm IR SFP scope on it. Only been to the range, and with my skill getting 2 MOA. Would this suffice?

With the exception that a lot of jurisdictions/provinces say they don't want people hunting big game with anything smaller than a certain size - i.e., most places won't let you hunt (legally) with a .223/5.56
THAT would be in the Hunting regulations Summary and up to him to know the rules before he engages in the pursuit of whatever game he intends to chase.

NB regs state "centerfire" for deer, bear, moose - NO CALIBER SPECIFIED ! All other hunting is "a rim-fire or center-fire rifle" with NO caliber specs either.
