Maybe so, but its just so...... boring. I think I still have one in the back of the safe.Best gun? Personal preference.
But best calibre......
I actually believe the .308 is the One and Done deer rifle.

The OP is one of two things. He's either trolling or an absolute newbie. Giving him the benefit of the doubt and being a newbie, I'm thinking an obscure cartridge would be a big mistake.Maybe so, but its just so...... boring. I think I still have one in the back of the safe.
I like the obscure, different calibres, Especially in a lever action. This year the '71 in .348 gets the job...
Ft-lbs of energy is quite misleading. According to the charts the 45-70 should bounce off whatever animal its shot at....my first answer in this thread was me trying to be helpful..... suggesting the OP study terminal ballistics and cartridges.
Being totally honest and long before I joined CGN to learn from others..... I also wondered what it takes to kill animals as far as calibers went.
I had an SKS, a remington 870 express magnum with 2 barrels, and my dad's surplus no1 mkIII enfield .303 brit.
My first thought was the sks wasn't ideal but really i didn;t know. I discovered articles on terminal ballistics and it had a chart showing "minimum recommended" foot pounds of energy at the target at various ranges for most of north america's large game species from deer to bison to grizzly bears. I learned a lot from that as someone who hadn't shot any animals yet and at the time was apprehensive about it.
Going forward from that education on terminal ballistics, I knew the sks wasn't ideal except for very close range under 100M kills (ideally) and that dad's old .303 would kill anything I encountered inside 300M as long as I chose the right bullet and made an accurate shot in the vitals.
beyond that..... everything then becomes personal choice as far as what rifle and cartridge "you" decide is your preferred deer hunting rig.
I use .303 british and 7mm rem mag for deer and soon I'll be using a .338federal on some deer hunts too.
Absolutely. The OP is one of two things. He's either trolling or an absolute newbie. Giving him the benefit of the doubt and being a newbie, I'm thinking an obscure cartridge would be a big mistake.
Mainline and common is the way to go. He needs something he can buy at CT. 6.5CM, 308, 30-06, 270Win and the like.
BC doesn’t have any caliber restrictions for centerfire rifles while hunting lg game unless you’re hunting bison, they only specify no rimfireNB regs state "centerfire" for deer, bear, moose - NO CALIBER SPECIFIED ! All other hunting is "a rim-fire or center-fire rifle" with NO caliber specs either.
